The cheeepo Chinese knock off Vag-Com is just that. You can't update it, you can't get all the latest stuff off the CanBus on many VAG cars either. One report I seem to recall actually changed some UK-set parameters to US ones which couldn't then be changed back again and saved.
I bought direct from VAG-Com in the US in their early days (yes, lugging a PC out to the car parked out front, CRT monitor, mouse, AT keyboard, and all the cables, and an extension mains lead with a lumpy multi-way adapter (what would the neighbours think -- I saw them, rustling the lace)
I actually did manage to set my daylight running lights to indicators as running lights,
and the folding mirrors. Advertised my availability and over five years got a whole three calls, one a dealer, one a Golf Mk II startup problem, and one for folding mirrors
Going to rallys was interesting -- used to burn off the boyz with their tasteful all black, de-chromed, de-badged, small wheels & lowered Golfs with the W5 engine in them. And baseball caps worn the wrong way round
Only thing was they invariably had uprated their brakes to Brembo. And thats where, against my SEL estate, they always outbraked me <I've wibbled> I'm sure that my QP would do 156 with ease.
Just that I'm 15 years older now...
