You don't. The computer decides when you want the dash lit. If you disagree: tough ****.

Probably off a photocell, I used to have a car like that, possibly a Volvo

Can I get his old size 4’s?Is he still trying to get in size 5 shoes?
TBH I can imagine it's one of those things. I recall taking mine in to Giallo for $something and asking them to look at the switches because the dash illumination didn't come on with the head lights.
Nope, they have an over complex agorithm instead. Apparently huge numbers of owners from new made the complaint.
Although that's not in the manual

WHAT!!
At risk of sounding like the guy who needs putting out of his misery, is that a thing?
That has pi$$ed me off for years, the 1st 5 minutes of any nightime drive my speed is complete guesswork and you're saying that the car has been doing that on purpose?! Who would design that, in what possible situation could that be considered useful??
You have blown my mind .... I'm off for a lie down
Tape over the sensor?
Where's the sensor?
Driving in the dark with headlights on I initially get no back illumination of the dials though the needles are lit, then after a few minutes the back lighting gradually fades up to fully lit. Is this something else then?
Or maybe the car really does hate me.
It's not 'the' sensor. There are at least two for cabin and lights.
C
If you cover the cabin one then the instruments will always be lit with the headlights, will they not?
