Engine fan issue

Hello all, long term owner but not really a forum frequenter!

I've got an issue with my Maserati 4200 CC. The engine fan is coming off and on all the time - cycling on for around 30 seconds, then off for 30 seconds.

The car isn’t overheating, and once warmed up the dash temp shows at a shade under 90 degrees. I’ve checked and there are no error codes, and it makes no difference whether AC is off or on. I haven’t driven the car for 2.5 months, if that could be relevant?!

I know there are various sensors and thermostats...can anyone point me in the right direction from the symptoms described?

Thanjs

First of all, I would try it without the air con on. As this will cycle the fan rapidly if it is short of gas. If it stops or the cycle time increases significantly this means your air con needs a pressure test and some gas. If it stays the same it is probably the fan resistor which lives at the bottom of the radiator. Most use the Alfa alternative part for £20 or so.

Hi, thanks - I’d already checked with aircon off and on, and it made no difference. Don’t suppose you have the Alfa part number? Sounds like that’s worth a shot.

Thanks - I’ve found it on eBay and can see it on the car. Presumably just accessed from underneath the car?

Two cross head screws and swap the resistor over, job done.
I wish you had been here for mine. Screws were well and truly stuck. Had to use a carbide burr in a Dremel to chew out the old resistor. More cussing and dog kicking. Swapped cross heads for allen screws for future ease. And now working on motor mounts....
BTW Conaero, long ago I had a 1970 Opel Gt. Loved that little car.

Yes, well, the sands of time got that one.

Opel GT, a car that will be with me always, never selling it.

Did mine during winter hibernation and it cured the on & off full speed running all the time. One screw came out the other I had to grind the head off but then it easily removed with mole grips on it once the resistor was out the way. Have posted this pic before but mine was all corroded as were the terminals ends on the wiring.72592
