Bizarre - whilst not condoning in any way what the defendant did, you would have thought the dealer would have run some basic checks online which would have revealed the fraud long before they did the deal.

Equally, when was a 599 only worth £75k?

Easily 75k on a trade in based on a quick autotrader search. The bigger issue is that the dealer thought they were conning the guy out of a GTO for half of the £400k that they change hands at!

"The vehicle was imported into the UK and was registered on the UK vehicle database not as a 2007 GTB but as a 2010 GTO.

It was that information that fed the HPI report ran by the dealership. "

I’ve seen them that low. There are a few in the £75-85k mark. I wasn’t quite brave enough to go for one of those though.

Love the spin he used to try and justify it but it’s a little naive to think it wouldn’t be found out. Probably right on the value of the Mclaren though

On a much lower value when I was looking to buy an Elise nearly 20 years ago I was interested in a Millennium edition.
The Millennium could be had in either 111 or 111s spec with the VVC engine.
Normally the 111s looks quite different to the 111 with different wheels, seats etc, but the Millennium edition looked the same, both engine options with 111s wheels and seats etc.
There were many owners and even non Lotus dealers adverting Millennium edition cars as 111s when they were not.
I remember going to see a car privately advertised as a Millennium 111s, and the seller was gutted when I lifted the engine cover and told him he had the basic 118BHP 111 not the 143BHP 111s varient.
He was adament his was the 111s until I proved it with it not having the VVC inlet plenum.

Yes exactly. All of a sudden the dealer wants recourse but had they of benefited to the same tune, it would have been hi-fives and bottles of Crystal.

If anything, this is bad press for the dealership. Buy from us and we will sue you.

With so many poorly recorded cars on the DVLA data base I'm surprised this is not a hourly problem... how many GSs are recorded as 'spyder'? My WBAC valuation is always far higher because of this, and I bet the minimum wage pleb at the Portacabin on a supermarket car park has little idea what a spyder is!

Win win then. Get it down there quick.

Whatever happened to dealers checking cars properly. When I wanted to part exchange my Porsche boxster, motorserve put the car on the ramp, had an inspection of about half an hour and then agreed a valuation.

They wouldn't budge on the V8 vantage mind so I walked away.

I agree, a 599 GTO I expect is anywhere between £400 - £600k, so if it was genuine no doubt they would have been laughing all the way to the bank when they then sold it on for a cool £250-300k profit.

The difference being that a dealer would have reasonable grounds to argue that the owner / seller of the car would know what they are selling and if they get what they are offered then a deal is a deal.
In the case quoted the seller admitted he knew he was misrepresenting the car, he was lucky not to get done for fraud.

Agree that’s factually correct, but still super negative press for the dealer. Firstly, they are not experts on what they are buying (particularly an issue on such a rare high value car), secondly by definition, that means they are not experts on what they are selling you (buyer beware) and finally, if you’re not smart they’ll take you to the cleaners on the PX if you don’t have a strong understanding of the market. All in all not very positive for the dealer and not somewhere I would go as a buyer.

This incident happened during lockdown so rules at the time gave the guy the opportunity to bypass any pre inspection.
