Front brake pads

I took my 3200 to get a new set of pads fitted to the front last week. When I got it back everything seemed fine until I took it on the motorway, at about 80mph ish a deep rumbling noise could be heard from the front of the car and when I pushed the brakes in to slow down it felt like very bad fading on and off. I took it back to the garage and asked them what pads they had fitted and they said they used EBC?

They have now said they cant reproduce the problem without exceeding the speed limit so I've got to take them out for a spin.

My take on it is that it wasnt like this before they changed the pads so it can't be anything else. Anyone experienced similar?

Hi Nick, for what it's worth, prior to buying my 3200gt about a month back I was running a mark 4 Golf R32. In April I upgraded all discs and pads, including EBC yellow stuff on the front. I had a very similar problem; not when off the brakes but when slowing down from motorway speeds, the front pads felt very rough and gave off a noise of heavy vibration under even the lightest of braking. Stripped them all down, checked the new discs and pads to see if there was any uneven wear but all looked ok - it doesnt offer much in the way of help other than to say I had a similar issue with EBC pads. It did improve after 6-8 weeks of regular use, but still left me scratching my head for a while! Hope you get it sorted -

Nick, what EBC pads are you running?

REDs are terrible, if you are running those, get them changed. The pads do have a wear in section on the face of the pads that takes a few miles to remove. Yellows are too hard too, the only EBC's I got on with were the Greens, they were ok.

If I were you I would get Ferrodo or Green Grippers fitted.

Turned out that I just needed to drive it a bit further to properly bed the pads in, done another 100 miles and it seems fine. The vibration at speed is caused by having uneven (though good) disks and new flat pads, the fading was just due to the fact the pads weren't bedded in properly. They seem fine now.

I got mine done for £150 including the pads.

Greens are the cheapest of the three and perform the best IMHO.

Think they are around £70 a set

The EBC Greens are not bad at all, I used to use them back in my rallying days, brilliant for road circuits in my race prep'd Pug 106 Rallye

New disks next time would be the cheap Ferrari alternative parts... Not from Eurospares!

I didn't know there was an issue? I thought there was plenty of different suppliers of the 550 disks? Have I missed something?
