Garage Dehumidifiers

Can anyone recommend a dehumidifier for my 6m x 6m garage?

It’s not damp in there but I did get some corrosion due to condensation on some bare cylinder heads over the winter that I wasn’t expecting, probably more a function of temp and dew point than being excessively humid.

You will constantly be fighting nature (more damp air) unless the garage is quite air tight and insulated.

I use this one for shed and garage, I get about 2-3 years use till they break. These will work if garage gets cold, compressor type (at least the cheap ones) can freeze up in winter:

Should be able to get one around £150-160.

I have this one too & it's fantastic. I was getting mould growing inside and it has totally eliminated it. It is automatic so can left on constant and self empties via a pipe which I have running outside into the garden so no worries about having to keep an eye on the tank.

If I put a car away in the garage having driven it in the rain, it is dry within 24 hours so you can assume it is also drying the underside and the areas you can't reach to dry. My garage is a double tandem and this model works a treat

Thanks I’ll have a look for one of those.

Garage is well insulated, floor is sealed and has a membrane and there’s no gapping holes.

Gaping is a little more than ventilation I know, but might this be working against you..?

I think there is the right amount of ventilation, I think the two biggest contributing factors this winter were because I spent a lot of time in there so moisture from my breath etc and opening the door a lot.

I also have the same Meaco unit in my garage which is a long tandem (40' x12') plus a workshop area at the side to make it L shaped.
It does its job in winter - No condensation on the car or tools when its cold and damp outside. Again I have it on continuous drain.

A desiccant dehumidifier is the way forward. They work all temperatures, unlike the refrigeration ones that are only really effective in the mid range of relative humidity and in warmer temps.

It is a constant battle, vapour pressure means that moisture can migrate through a porous wall let alone through gaps around doors. The right settings are important though, too dry and it will dry out leather on seats.

I've got two types of Maeco dehumidifier. A newer slightly more expensive Meaco DD8L Zambezi Desiccant Dehumidifier and an older slightly cheaper Meaco12L Low Energy Platinum Dehumidifier.

The DD8L has gone wrong twice and now just last week a 3rd time. The power supply board everytime. It will get picked up by Maeco again and repaired FOC. So great support but obviously an issue there. It is also in the best environment.

The cheaper older school one looks older and is in a harsher environment. Never gone wrong and I have 3 of these.

Maybe my DD8L is a

No consumables in a Maeco. Also, don't turn them off from the socket - only from the off button; the desiccant wheel needs to cool down first, otherwise the thermal fuse blows. If your garage is fairly dust free check/clean filter at the back once a week, dust can get sucked into the pores of the desiccant wheel.
