Ghibli Hybrid Coming Soon

The "online" event may have not been impressive - even though I liked the "no frills, down to Earth" atmosphere - but the hybrid version is one of several new initiatives Maserati really needs, and should improve sales, which can only be good at this point. Of course, the new engine was not a surprise; information about it has been circulating since sometime last Winter. However, the mild facelift of the Ghibli is really nice and should help the model survive a couple more years until the new sedan is launched.

I think the anticlimax is largely due to the fact that this was the first product launch from Maserati for such a long time, and neither the product nor the event matched the anticipation that has been built up. Remember; this launch was scheduled to come after the presentation of the MC20 launch in May (now scheduled to take place in September), which would probably have created a lot of excitement and enthusiasm for Maserati. The more low key presentation of the Ghibli facelift and hybrid engine would have worked perfectly fine following such a "grand" event, which it instead now had to precede.

Good to see the diesel gone. Mate took a diesel QPVI in as a PX recently and said it was hard to shift on.

A 4 cylinder light hybrid petrol was all they were going to do. The car still looks good and the dash design is much more attractive than many other cars at this price point so hopefully they will sell a few. It is a hand to mouth existence mind which is a shame for a brand with such a strong image and heritage.

I won't be buying the MC20 - don't buy cars that expensive - so am hoping a new front engined GT ticks all the boxes when it arrives.

pop pop pop pop pop pop pop...good for city use by people who don't want performance...It was used in the 500 and Panda as well.

Yeah, rather my point. I find myself almost genetically averse to anything with fewer than 6 cylinders these days...... I'm hoping to make the most of it!

I was watching some advert the other day, can't remember what but I probably got a 'free' pen for agreeing to spend £25,000 over the next 30 years but it was presented by Carol Vorderman and I couldn't work out whether she had had more facelifts than the Ghibli...

It appears to be a 2.0 litre turbo with an electric supercharger. Which sounds a bit mad to me? i mean the whole point of hybrids is lowering emmisions and running on electricity, and it clearly does none of that. it also avoids the really cool thing about electric drive is the huge torque and unbroken acceleration. no idea what they are thinking here, probably a bodge because they dont have an electric drive ready yet.

Cringe worthy... who's the knob who cant sit straight to the camera?

I am at a loss with why Ytube people are in such high regard... most of thier followers are pre pubescent kids who still hide under the bed sheets tugging one off to the latest hyper car seen in Kensington.

It will replace the diesel, and easily outperforms it on basically all performance measures.

If you're referring to the YouTuber guy in the leather jacket, that's 'Mr JWW' (link: YouTube channel). As I mentioned in a previous post, having met and spoken with him before, whilst he's not 'anti-Maserati', he's certainly not a Maserati fan. Looks like Maserati hoped that his appearance may boost their ratings!...

The whole thing was fake, a sell-out, and a disappointment to say the least.

I'm interested in hybrids, as I'm an ideal candidate for a PHEV. (I have solar panels on the house to be able to charge the car up for free, and most of my journeys are short, meaning I could do 95%+ of my journeys on electric alone). Yet the new Ghibli Hybrid doesn't fit the bill whatsoever. I can't help but feel this is yet another missed opportunity by Maserati.

I think I get what Maserati were trying to do here - ie rope thousands of people into key product launch briefings, emulating Apple with their Developers Conference keynotes. It almost worked - the YouTuber lacked any credibility but it was nice to see Italian Product Managers talking enthusiastically about their areas. It’s just a shame that the first new Maserati release just revealed a variant on an existing model and a 4-cylinder one at that. Not too much to get excited about. BUT, I am glad that it felt like Maserati is being allowed to do their own thing and are not being bullied by FCA. I just can’t get too excited about the all electric future. It may be inevitable but it will be more difficult than ever to maintain brand differentiation when drive trains are all silent

Having looked at it, it’s quite a clever thing that they have done. The alternator becomes a motor that starts and contributes to low speed power and then the e-booster fills in the boost before the turbo kicks in giving better low down performance. It’s not going to compete with full blown hybrids but it’s pretty smart. But not a V8, obvs!

What would have been better and caught more of my attention was if the wasnt the same shape as every other Ghibli. Under that sheet in the adverts I thought it looked more interesting than the standard car but alas no. The way they were counting down over the months and giving it a big launch it should have been something new. Now if it had been a Coupe version of the Ghibli or even an estate/shooting break now that would have been far more interesting.
