Ghibli Starts but Stalls

Morning,

I taxed it on Saturday and thought i would take it out, but it wasn't to be.

Car started fine, revved smoothly but when you took your foot of the accelerator it just stalled.

Before getting it out the garage again, any pointers of things to look at ?

thanks

I realized I understood the problem upside down.
If the engine dies when you release the accelerator then:
  • not enough air "leak": idle valve does not open AND the air bypass not open enough (which means any air leak will prevent from stalling)
  • throttle position sensor does not detect the "idle" position (means pedal released)
  • could be a bad temperature sensor: air or water

thank you for suggestions, but measuring values is a little beyond my skill level.

Fuel Pressure regulator is also worth looking at to so check that.

ICV and BOV have arrived so will fit this evening to see if it makes any difference, the car runs so with a bit of clutch slipping i could get it to a garage.

thanks

I fitted the above and it starts and runs !!

As in a rush i just pushed the ICV into the hole without the retaining ring - there was a loud bang as it shot out of the manifold !!!

The gaskets from McGraths havent turned up yet so the "y" piece was leaking and hissing.

It idled at about 1200 and the cel was on, but that is a job for another day.

Decided to remove the manifold to check seals and clean, it is also the only way i could get at the icv bolts.

30 mins to get it out, i have done it a few times now.

I cleaned it and put it through the dish washer. I bought the throttle body and y piece gaskets during the week, i had some shoe lace gasket left, and i thought a set of manifold gaskets but i was wrong. Will have to order on monday.

One of the air temp sensors in the back of the manifold snapped, before it was even close to being tight.

Eurospares list them as £58, plus vat and delivery so best part of £100 - they must use envelopes coated in gold leaf !!

They do appear to be very similar to Ford Cosworth ones, lots of magneti marelli parts do seem to be used on both cars.
Ford Cosworth YB ACT ATS04 ACT NTK Air Temp Temperature Sensor | eBay

They are only up the road from me so will take it up on monday and see if they are the same.

We are getting there.

New air temp sensors fitted.

Went to Wickes yesterday was idling high circa 2000 revs, drove around for 10 mins and suddenly we were idling at 900 revs pulling smoothly, new bovs gave me full boost again !!

Eventually got to Wickes and we were back to 2000 revs. The throttle doesn't appear to know where it is, you push the pedal down and nothing nothing then full acceleration. I was upto 4000 revs to pull out of a busy junction. A bit like the 3200 when that fails.

Limped up to the garage i use, he is a Ford man and the ignition set up is very similar to a Cosworth.

Tested the exhaust gases and the readings were as expected so O2 sensors are ok. Even whilst in the garage being tested the car would go from a steady 900revs up to 2000 for no reason.

He recommended changing the water temp sensors as they arent the best. We will then look at setting up the TPS correctly, smoke testing it and reading the codes generated by the CEL. He said he had loads of old diagnostic tools from 20 years ago and he should have one that fits.

Things to look at / change.
The absolute pressure sensors are available and not very expensive, they appear to be the same as a ford escort.
The TPS is not, it is a Weber PF10 and they no longer make them, Webcon didnt appear to have a replacement...

Will report back

You should be able to test the TPS by measuring it’s voltage output as you move the pedal. It should be linear. If it isn’t and jumps around then that could be your problem.

Afternoon,
Will put that on the list of jobs for him to do !!

o2 sensors.
Eurospares list them for a very reasonable £832 plus vat plus delivery

Speaking to Ross at meridian modena he said they have been out of stock for 10 years but they have used a sensor from a landrover discovery 1995 V8 and you swap the connectors. He had the code LB1105, which does cross reference to Ghibli 2/ Shamal Rover 800, TVR chimera and a couple of Astons.
Found a pair of new NTK ones on ebay for £217.

The sensors are 20 old years old now it wont hurt to change them.

thanks

The O2 sensors i listed above they dont have, despite taking my money.....

I have ordered an ERR6729. and with the £100 i saved bought 4 Meat and Doria 87004 sensors which are the cam and crank sensors.

Oneball - you seem to know lots of things. Do you have a cross ref for the Knock and Map sensors ?

As I am changing 25 year old sensors (the cheap ones), i may as well go for them all !!.

TPS.
The throttle body on the Ghibli has the cable operating it from the front, which appears to be unusual. Most of the Weber TPS sensors are set up to rotate anti clockwise when looking at the rear of them. The PF10 rotates clockwise . It appears to have been used on one other vehicle the even rarer Moto Guzzi Quota.

I did find on a Moto Guzzi site that they can use a Harley Davidson27271-95

Once i get round to testing it i at least have an alternative !

Don’t know much about specific parts but if you look on Eurospares it’s quite easy to then have a google of the part numbers. They show the MAP in stock seems to be same as 3200GT p/n

Googling the knock sensors p/n comes back as Magneti 14B shared with the Integrale, at £350 each!!!!

Knocksensors: start the search with Fiat 7614103, but very hard to find.... Look on Ebay for example item: 255523416682 (they are Made by Marelli)The Lambda is indeed the ERR6729

I had seen those !!!
I have no reason to think they are not working, it was just a case of if they are cheap i will replace them - £350 each is not that cheap...

thanks

Nobody......
That was on Eurospares website

Meridian Modena said there are two in the Ferrari Dealer Worldwide network, i have emailed then for a price, but i can see that being more than the £350 posted above !!!
