In tomorrow's Modern Classics...
Thankyou to the owner (you may know him...) for the loan of the GS MC V, no thanks to the very rude pub owner, and thank you too to Joe Macari.

Nice article and very interesting confirmation of the differences Vs the GS. Glad to see a £70k valuation on the car. Mine is just having PPF applied to it and full paint correction. Unfortunately she doesn't get driven much these days since I have the Guilia Nring as my daily.

Well if you need anyone to give it a run out. It’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make. Ahem

So what's so special about an 4200 GS MC Victory, ok it was rare end of production 4200 GS with a few extra bits and pieces fitted

Or have I missed something

Yes - you’ve missed something. The difference in the seats and steering (alone) make them feel very different. The MC-V feels faster and more special, compared to a regular GS.

But a good GS at £25k is better value.

Not only that but if you look at a parts catalogue, there are many bits - from the gearbox to engine parts - that have MC Victory versions and normal versions.

Ignoring any arguments over value for money, if you drive an MC-V you will be disappointed going back to a normal GS. The MC-V is greater than the sum of its parts and those parts are bloody good!

MC-V is a fabulous thing and I think Nayf's article pinpoints the differences from a neutral perspective very well.

On value, we can all agree the GS and 4200 (and 3200) are under-valued in the market compared to other marques but Maserati do themselves or their heritage no favours here and if it were not for this forum I would struggle with the appetite and energy to keep one going. I do think it worthwhile though as they are fabulous, if flawed, when on song.

Lovely cars both of them.

However given the poor parts supply on a standard GS How on earth would you keep a MCV standard?

Of course the MCV is the ultimate Coupe but I guess it is one of those law of diminishing returns. Those extra little bits of betterness just cost that but more.

If your prepared to pay for it then the MCV is the ultimate and on a par with a Strad in those realms.

If course a GS is better value and much more sensible. Then a 4200 even better value again but when was a Maserati supposed to be sensible!

The seats alone on an MCV are many arms and legs. Same again as Strad carbon seats.

One would hope that the MCV is the halo car which as it becomes out of reach to most (whether by just none being for sale or price or both) then the price of a good GS would creep up. That said you could say the same about GS prices leading to a 4200 price rise but it has not happened yet and thus the 4200 provides amazing value and bang for the buck. Reputation means people run scared I guess, admire them from afar and then buy a Porsche instead which is equally problematic and expensive to fix but somehow this is not internet forum folklore.

The fact that an MCV and the Strad are at similar price points is interesting and makes for a difficult choice. MCV wins for me purely down to size, packaging and a better sense of identity.

It might have ruined the standard car for me – the steering rack really makes that much of a difference.
I could take a pass on the seats – though that has more to do with the width of my posterior at the time I tested the car than anything else.

Quaife can build bespoke steering racks, can't they? Hmmm

Yep, I couldn't go back to the standard car now. Similar situation to saying to Aston V8 Vantage owners, don't drive the V12 if you are not ready, willing and able to buy one :)

One could argue the same with GranTurismo MC-Shift to Strad but those differences are way less in my opinion. (Difference between Auto and MC-Shift is massive but that is just personal choice.)

Picked up a copy this morning and read the MC12 and MC Victory articles on the train ride home. Very good as usual, interesting and informative.

I wonder if there are any of these steering racks floating about as spares... Would be a great addition to my 4200 manual project

I did not know that the MC12 did not compete at the Le Mans 24hr that is quite a shame as I guess it probably would have had a good shot at winning

The same kind chap who loaned his car to the magazine gave me a copy of said magazine yesterday. It made for a good and interesting read. I had no idea how different the MCV is from a standard GS. What a wonderful looking car. Good magazine as well. I shall pick it up more often.
