The XJ has “soft close” doors, so you just pull them gently and the car does the rest, or can just slam them as hard as you can, which is what my wife does.

Continental had the same thing. The US were up in arms about kids getting their fingers amputated and how could they pull the fuse <smh>

Hallelujah, I thought it was just mine who slams the boot into week and tries to get the door to change sides….

I noticed that my drivers side boot strut had a broken joint (plastic collar had disintegrated). I was tempted to order two of the same Lift-O-Mat struts again (guess these are supplied as OEM?). But given the joints are plastic then it’s likely they’ll fail again over time.

I therefore ordered a set from SGS as have used them on other cars in the past. These have metal push fit joints / collars with a metal retaining pin, as opposed to plastic joints and metal retaining clips on the Lift-O-Mats.

On removing the old struts I could see that whilst there was some grease in the strut joint, that the body part they connect to is painted but the paint has started to come off. It could be that over time the bits of paint have caused an erosive effect, which in turn has caused the plastic collar to break.

So, I rubbed away the remaining paint, made sure it was free from debris, added fresh grease and fitted the new struts. I also lightly cleaned and lubricated the lever arms on both sides. The boot now opens and closes a little more smoothly than before.

Link to the struts - SGS part number GSC3207

Ahhh amazing - thanks so much @Cyclone1 - I'm about to buy the very same for my 2011 GTS. How did you find the installation process?

My pleasure.
It’s a very simple installation process. The boot is very heavy so be conscious of this when removing and replacing the struts.
