GranTurismo - Filling up at the Petrol Station

So here's a gremlin with the GranTurismo discovered the hard way.

When at a gas station, made the mistake of pumping more gas into the tank, despite hearing the first click from the bowser handle indicating full.

Apparently the Maser doesn't like the extra petrol. Throws up an engine warning light.

Have since had it cleared.

Temperamental Italians it seems lol

Message from my Maser Indie.

"Screw the petrol cap in firmly after filling up until you hear it clicking. That's what throws up a warning light - the petrol cap is loose and letting in air"

There you go it seems. Problem solved.

Something must be letting air into the tank all the time, otherwise it would either be strong enough to not let the fuel out, or implode if it did suck the fuel out.

The cap on my daily drive actualy reads "Turn to click to prevent system failure" :)
If it's not fully closed it will mess up the EVAP system and throw the error.

Wow! That's impressive. The new QP doesn't even have a cap as such - it's built into the fuel flap. Close the flap and the tank is sealed.

Cars are way too complicated these days, carbs and points is where it's at

My XKR was virtually a write off because the airbag and abs lights were on, the car was perfectly OK to drive but beyond economical repair to sort them out , there's thousands of classics that don't have any of these systems on the road every day but mine wouldn't pass an MOT

Same with the Ghibli. I actually found it a bit strange at first but it actually makes sense. On my GranTurismo I have managed to break the tab that the filler cap sits on during refuelling - I've glued it back on - and snapped the retraining strap for the cap by getting it caught up whilst tightening! Guess the new system would suit me!!

My first fill up in the QPV resulted in an error code because I had not tightened the cap enough (it transpired)
I did not know this at the time so you can imagine my horror on a new buy
I subsequently snapped the retaining lead but manage to live without that!
BTW I never fill up.
I just put £60 worth in when approaching the warning light area on the dash fuel gauge
Agree too many inputs for an error to appear - I mean a petrol cap?

I deliberately removed the rubber band retaining lead - useless piece of tat that gets in the way.

Its mad - no doubt with the ABS and Airbag lit your car will still be safer and stop quicker than a most Pre - 90s cars that are deemed safe.

Unbelievable really gents.

Suggested to my mechanic that I always overfill the Mazda and never an issue.

Tells me most Masers and the GT are temperamental.

Suggested if I have to buy it flowers and chocolates whilst filling up.

Don't get me wrong, love the GT and Italian cars, but it's these sort of gremlins which can be annoying.

only really a gremlin if you repeat it..............as Einstein said, insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results! lol

Do you miss the days where if it was rainy the distributor/points would have too much moisture to start the engine?
Do you miss the days where you would flood the engine if you inadvertently hit the gas pedal when starting?
Or the days of using the manual choke on carburetors or fixing the automatic choking mechanism every now and then?

I'll take a gremlin and dash light every now and then in exchange for the general added reliability and efficiency we have these days.

Gremlins and dash light yes but writing cars off for them is crazy

some years ago I used to deliver parts to a truck manufacturer

they were boxing up 7.5T trucks for months

i asked what they were doing, we got caught with a load of euro 3 engines which can't be sold in europe so to get rid we've built the trucks and we're sending them to mexico

it's a good job Mexico is on a separate planet or those deadly emissions could be life threatening to the planet

perfectly useable cars are being scrapped because it keeps people in work

Funny enough I do miss being able to tinker with cars. File the high spots off the contacts, Clean the dizzy cap. Being able to trouble shoot the rough idle or running without having to get a computer out to read codes. Codes that often point to a symptom rather than the route cause of the problem.

I'm sure at some point I will buy something like an MGB GT so i can get back to tinkering with cars again.
