Here is a snapshot of a few Maseratis for sale at a dealer just outside Oslo in Norway...

Around 9.1 NOK to the pound at the moment, not sure if there are any further taxes to add to these prices,
but pretty steep anyway:

Hey that makes Australia seem positively cheap. I forgot how socialist the Scando countries were, they don't like flashy there, everyone needs to look the same and have the same. I remember visiting my mate in Copenhagen in what was at the time a 3 year old Audi convertible. He nearly fell over and it did get some looks he said it was worth about a 100,000 euro's (exchange rate was a bit more in favour of the pound back in 2006)!!! A 20,000 pound car, its insane. I don't understand why you just wouldn't buy a car Germany and leave it German registered.

The same applies to lots of countries which don't have an indigenous car production....ie the Republic of Ireland...so they wack on a huge luxury tax......lots of people tried to buy cars in N Ireland, at a 30-40% saving, but if you live in the south, you must register it there and then pay relevant taxes, whether its new or 2ndhand; if not you run the risk of it being confiscated!

P

PS The road tax on a typical Maserati in the Republic is a mere 1,500 Euros....and I think lots of other EU countries charge similar amounts.....long live the Con/Lib coalition.....:)....!!!!

Howie is right.

I can tell you now - I could not have afforded / justified the GTS in Aus - with bells and whistles, on road tax, "dealer delivery" (that one I have always loved) , insurance, you're 400k give or take a cappucino - its insane (although Ireland brings a tear to my eye).

Rudd is fool - always has been - his latest annoucement concerning 40% additional tax on mining companies / enterprise is breathtaking in its stupidity and short sightedness. Billions in developement cancelled over night - eg Rio. And the electorate has said - you are an idiot - even labour voters. Australia and the west in particular is built on the back of its mining industry and he does that. He is an absolte muppet - I will not rant any longer. Aus has become very very expernsive for everything.

The camera, fine, hoon law thing has long been a source of controversy in Aus. It has achieved nothing other than raise huge revenue. Even if you throw 400k away to get the car you are frightened to drive it - you get a couple of points and the insurance becomes ludicrous.

I have been here now for 3 years. There is much I do miss about Aus but it depends entirely on your life style. If you have a tribe of kids and like beach holidays with them you probably wouldnt move to the UK. If not, london is hard to beat - although also eye wateringly expensive.

I am trying to be optimistic with the Cameron et al. Anything is better than Brown - also incredibly short sighted and thoroughly delusional.

A new start here I hope for the UK although it is going to be very difficult for all sorts of reasons.

Yup, a very much cut your nose off despite your face scenario......in Australia at the moment......

I would ONLY support additional taxation.....IF...and its a big IF....they salted that money away for a rainy day........then and only then....to squander it when the times are good as they did in the Irish Republic.......is truly criminal!

In other words...the politicians concerned should be liable before both the electorate.......and the law!

Yes BigFoot I agree having a population that is 51% or more I think female and of that a good majority of them blonde, thin and about 5'9" could never be called a bad thing. Strangely the two I have been most attracted too were brunettes (1 Swedish and 1 Danish), both curiously named Anna but nothing unusual about that.

Yeah I was hopeful for the UK election but with no clear majority I don't think a lot is going to change. I dare say its going to be the same here when we have an election later in the year.

As for gov't keeping money for a rainy day well I am definitely all for them reducing spending to go into surplus but when they increase taxes to do it, it makes me angry. STOP STEALING MY MONEY!! Especially here where they are stealing it from the only really productive part of the economy earning export dollars and continually ploughing it into a hugely inefficient health system, which won't get any better run federally just employ more bureaucrats and continuing to prop up a ridiculously high property market which produces nothing and adds nothing to the economy. Oh except allow people to go into more debt which means gov't prints money means massive inflation continues. Aus was cheap 5 years ago and really cheap 10 years ago now I think even London doesn't look that expensive.

On Ireland I would have thought with no uncompetitive local car industry to protect there is no excuse for a tax. Sorry what am I saying we are talking about a gov't right.

I seem to have gone off the topic of cars!

So thats how they pay for the army of people it must take to clean up the dog sh*t!

Its all wrong. I never thought I would say this but I wish I could go and work in America for a while. It would be so good not to have sink your next 20 years wages into a mortgage on an overpriced house!!

I hear you Howie. I am currently looking at buying a house in London and it's scarily expensive. For, admittedly, houses that in the continent, let alone America, would pass as ... well, ****.

Howie, it was more the rationale that the governemnt would benefit to the same degree as car maker in virtually matching the amount of money made through cars sales! Up until the 70s' many carmakers had a "kitcar" assembly plant in Ireland to reduce taxes on their cars.......thay arrived in their major components and then finished over here.....ie the labour, painting etc......Ireland was a very poor country until the 90s effectively, had it all for 10 years...then gambled it away..........sometimes capitalism aint the answer to every situation!

Up until then, car sales in the Republic of Ireland were the same as in N Ireland, but they had 3 times the population..........then they blossomed hugely over the 10 yer period...............then slumped by more than 2/3rds in 2 years!!!!!!

These are the actual figures...scary huh??!!

2007...............246,446

2008........ .........194,817

2009..................73,125

Yes trust the Gov't to close any loop holes that could potentially see them miss out on tax revenue, you would think they had earn't it even if it means washing away some local jobs. Those numbers are pretty dramatic but I think it was largely the trend around the world, the question is how quickly they recover. I don't expect we will get back to 07 levels for a while as the world was hyped up on credit. Used car prices jumped by 15% last year here in Aust. as people put off new car purchases, however the new year has started strong so this year should see a bit of a recovery here in Australia I don't think it will be as quick overseas by the sounds of it though.

I wonder if GM had 'not killed the electric car' 10 years ago with its volt which its spending millions reviving if they would now control the electric market and it may have been there savior!! A bit unrelated I know.
