Granturismo problem!

Hi all,

I viewed and test drove a 2008 4.2 granturismo when idling it was fine but with a bit of throttle the car shudders even when stationary. Felt like a misfire but I don’t think it was. Is there anything common that’s an issue with them like this? I did get a video but would have to work out how to upload it.

It could be a failed/failing coil pack, engine mounts but will need looking at to confirm

Where is it?

I had read engine mounts, would coil packs give any other issue. I would assume I could have seen the engine moving more than normal on low revs if it were mounts.

Sounds like a run away viewing unless the deal is exceptional and you can find out the issue or they are going to fix it.

I have an 08 4.2 GT which is has a vibration on idle. In the cabin it feels like a misfire but under the bonnet the engine sounds sweet. I’ve looked at the engine and gearbox mounts they look ok but frankly I haven’t seen that type before. Car runs fine under load. Having checked most other things I’m going to look at the mounts again in more detail, get someone to rev it while I see how the mounts react.

How bad is it. mine is reasonably sight and certainly doesn’t sound or feel like metal to metal contact. As you say a series of damped shudders with no real pattern.

I got a good deal and I didn’t let it put me off the car but I’m happy to work on it and got access to a lift etc. Also mine had a FMSH and I got a 12 month warranty. You gotta remember these are getting onto 13 year old cars they all will need work done to keep on top of the ageing process. Bottom line if you have any doubt or your not happy walk away. The whole point of owning one is to enjoy it.

It would be great if you could attach the video.

I would be using the warranty whilst I had it for sure. Especially if there is nothing obvious.

Engine mounts are a known weak point on GT's. Mine had a vibration that could be felt driving or revving at idle at around 1500rpm. The mounts are oil filled and it is not a cheap fix (I think around £700 several years ago. They were also on back order from from the factory for a long time- not sure if they still are.........

I’ll see if I can attach the video later today. I am very fortunate in that Conaero has agreed to look at it for me and give me an idea of what is up with it.

As an update to this, I took the car down to Matt and SportsItalia, and firstly I want to say how fantastic they are, what a great bunch.
The vibrations turned out to be overfilling of the oil, the car had around 2.5l too much oil, they drained out the excess and the car drives a hundred times better! They also helped me identify a few issues that the dealer had tried to hide! All round fantastic service from SportsItalia, I cannot recommend them highly enough!

Just 2.5l. That will have put some pressure on the internals a bit I would imagine. No wonder it wobbled.

Don't fall into their trap. They will be nice to lull you into a sense of security and then make you spend lots more wonga.
Must book my next visit..... ;)

Glad to hear you have found a solution. did they give you back the excess oil?
Put my car in there last year for complete subframe renovation and underside rustproofing. They kept all of the rust and holes meaning my car is at least several kilos heavier!
Maybe you get back to oil painted on the underside when it's as old as mine :D

Hang on. They kept my old springs too. Is Matt building himself an Evoque replacement?
