I had the exhaust back boxes off at the time to loosen up the valves, which may have made access underneath a little easier, but you certainly dont need to remove them to get the bumper off.

I love a bit of diy, and likely I'll need to do this at some point in the future. Thanks for taking the time to write it up and take pics.

I did mine, the Skoda part works fine. The hard bit for me is matching the sensor up to the Bianco Fuji paint...
Some comments:

I didn't unplug the lights or the battery.
I didn't try and undo the lower wheel arch bolts, so the bumper was still attached but enough for me to get in.

Error code now gone, working rear PDC and oddly my transmission error and limp mode gone away with it!
