Hi guys! Some interesting inputs. I am also surprised by the different gearbox alternatives and hence different character of the Granturismos. Have not yet test driven one but will hopefully get the opportunity within approximately one weeks time. Br Kristoffer

Kriss, clearly your budget will be a big factor in dictating what model you go for, but if it can stretch as faw as a 4.7 I would strongly advise going for that. For me personally I found the 4.2 version a very frustrating experience, the engine simply does not have enough torque to pull what is a big heavy car around and as such needs to rely on high revs to make any sort of swift progress. Then there is the auto gearbox in the 4.2 which as has been said above does not have full manual over-ride. What this means is that if you want to overtake a car on the motorway and put your foot down, the box will automatically drop at least 2 gears (assuming you were in 6th) with the resulting jolt and sudden noise, drove my wife nuts and was not a very subtle way of making swift progress. I am sure the exhaust options can get you close to the 4.7 sound, but you will be stuck with the inherent short-comings of the 4.2 gearbox and lack of torque.

The 4.7 is a completely different car, much more responsive and in the auto version has full manual control. I went for the MC-Shift box, which is simply stunning in full attack mode, but you do need to understand how it works to be smooth and sympathetic when trundling in traffic. I have also recenty driven the new GT-Sport Auto, which has revised shift software for the auto box and can report that it is now getting very close to the way the MC-Shift box operates, but without any of the clutch issues that the MC-Shift inevitably has. It is worth trying if it comes within your budget.

Good luck in your search and let us know how you get on.

All well said. Three very different cars, certainly in pre facelift forms.

Of the GT's I've driven, the 4.7 auto makes the most sense to me. Smooth, useable and quick, without trying to be more sporty than it actually is. It's the one I'd buy if I were in the market.

And don't stop posting Bigbob. There aren't many folk on here with Cups, Shamals or QP IVs, but it doesn't stop me twittering on!

Ir made by far the most sense to me, too. But sense isn't what motivated this particular purchase. It was heart, with a good dose of trousers, too.

Good evening! I think I have decided to buy a Grabtursmo 4,2. Somewhat appealed vy the S model but I cannot really motivate the price differance. The differerance in exhaust sound is quite substantial I understand? My thought is to buy a 4,2 and do a sports filter and sports exhaust upgrade? Is that wise if you want somewhat more "sound"? Anything to consider? I guess to avoid "red leather" interior for resale value. Cheers Kriss

I have a 4.2 (with red leather ;-) )

I also drove the 4.7 GTs and MC Shift (and MC Stradale! :-o ) on track at Maserati for 2 days recently.

I happen to live in the SE of England and still can't justify the £10k plus difference to move from 4.2 to a 4.7 and in fact I enquired recently! It is just not worth it in my view.

Both are lovely but I wouldn't be able to tell the difference in Surrey!

When I decided to buy a QP, I thought I might as well do it 'properly' and go for the 4.7. Both the 4.2 and 4.7 are by any standard thirsty and running costs ( insurance, servicing, etc) are unlikely to differ much. The extra performance probably won't be noticed most of the time but I suspect the 4.7 is a bit more effortless because of the extra torque. More important for me was that the 4.7 had significantly upgraded brakes - arguably needed for such a heavy car!

I faced a similar decision years ago when I was buying an Alfa 166: it had to be the V6, but there was a choice between the 2.5 and the 3.0. The latter won out for similar reasons to those above. I never regretted going for the 3.0, and that undoubtedly influenced my QP decision too.
