GT 4.2 Values (without a crystal ball...)

Hello Sports Maserati,
First time poster here - have been eyeing up purchasing a 4.2 GT for a few months (nearly went V10 M6 route which although quicker and cheaper, just didn't do it for me - too similar to my 330d as well). The GT is just so darn beautiful and great noise and it's a pre-kids extravagance.
What are people's thought's on values for them over the next year or so. I believe they have held up rather well the last 18/24 months with asking prices for low (30k) miles ~ £34/£35k and higher ones (50-60k) at more like £32k. I've been offered one of the high mileage at under £30k with warranty. Does this sound fair market value in the present insecure world economical climate? I realise that most cars depreciate, what I don't want to do is buy a car approaching 60k miles and have trouble selling it in say a year and end up giving it away. Or is it better to spend a little more now, and hope that will be returned when selling.
I read somewhere people think the values will adjust downwards by £5k over winter. Thoughts anyone?
With the 4.7's about 6 months ago one went at under £40k - the lower mileage 4.2 prices will slowly merge with higher mileage 4.7's thus £35k spent soon could be high 20's in a year? plus of course the issue of private/trade and the costs with those!
Any thoughts/people in possession of a crystal ball??
Many thanks in advance,
Laurence

Assume it will depreciate, drive it, enjoy it and keep it! They are something else.

There are not many cars that yo can buy that will appreciate overnight and I don't see the GT 4.2 or 4.7 being an exceptional case. If you buy smart (negotiate a sweet deal) then you could well factor in some of the depreciation if you only plan to keep it for a year.

Hi Contigo,
Yes I don't mind the usual ~£3k perhaps per year, I just don't want something double that!
Is there still a big blockage for cars just touching over 60k miles?
I would love to keep forever I just know if/when kids come along I'll have different (less selfish) priorities! Our only present car is my wife's TT so neither can take bikes/sailing kit!!

I've been keeping an eye on these over the last year as I'm a GT owner and thinking about a GTS... after a bit of a dip middle of last year the 4.2's seem to have held up well... and that may well facilitate my move up to a GTS...

That said, I've looked at a couple of the more affordable GTS cars and found them looking a little "unloved"... and these are main dealer stock... a few too many interior scuffs for my liking... and I guess it's the same for the slightly older GT's on the market...

It seems to me that condition, colour combo, and spec seem to be more important than year and miles...

My auto trader searches seem to suggest that there are fewer of both around at the moment as well ... dealers like ADG who can normally be relied on to have a small selection have little to offer ... and they are not the only ones... so I guess this is helping values... I think they're such a great car that owners tend to hang onto them a bit longer as there's really not much motivation to change ... other than another one..

So be fussy... That said... depending on how I get on tomorrow looking at a GTS... my 4.2 with 25k on the clock may well be up for grabs... and whilst I'm biased... I think it's a good one.. PM me if you might be keen.....

I can't see how you can only expect £3K per year depreciation on one of these especially once you've factored in the price a car sells for vs what a dealer will give you for it. Also, remember this is a Maserati so any maintenance or servicing can cost you dearly - look into servicing costs, brake disk/pad replacement costs. Even a cheap one can work out very expensive to run. Having said that, if you are like me, take your opportunity, do the man-maths and enjoy it while you can!

Lozzingers. If you are keen on one I would take Fangio up on that offer. A forum members car is the best way to go as most tend to be very well looked after.

Thanks guys,
I hear what you are all saying - and agree on most parts. I am trying to go in 'eyes open' as I want to reduce the risk of unexpected large bills as much as possible.
Fangio - I agree not all love their cars as much as others - especially inside. I just sold my 80k mile 330d touring in perfect condition inside, even having had bikes etc in the boot (just lots of cloths!) One M6 had had 9 owners and it showed inside - badly.
I know dealers will offer say £30k and mark up at say £35/36 hence I'm preferring private. One private has a top warranty so am quite comfortable with that for the year, but it does need a service... forum cars like you say are generally the most loved out there!
Fangio - I'll send you a pm :)
Time for some man maths...

Thanks for the pm Lozzingers... I've replied via email....

I notice that you've called it a "pre kids extravagance" .... .. in which case you might want to look again at the back seats in all of the models... as for most of us with kids they were a factor..
Mine are now hulking teenagers and find there's plenty of room in the back of the GT as they did in the 4200 before that.. Boot better on the GT but the coupe used to swallow a buggy, and all the usual accompaniments.

Rear room is far better than a 6 series ( and probably better than your 3 too)... So ... you don't have to sell your kids if they come along later...

In my opinion these cars are unique in that respect... no other maker offers a coupe with rear seats you can actually use...

Agree with that having owned all three cars mentioned.

I agree that there is good space in the rear - it's more a financial thing. I'd love to keep a GT for years it would be a dream, tell a baby they were picked up from the hospital in a Maserati would be amazing (as long as they grow up to like cars!) but realistically priorities will have changed and safe family car would be the order of the day. My parents sacrificed so much to send me to the best school possible (and they share a Skoda 1.6 diesel!), so until I have that covered, a Maser is very selfish of me.(but you only live once!)
Bikes and boats for me & my wife! The M6 had a carbon fibre roof so no roof racks possible - think perhaps a GT could hack a blow up rack?!
Ah decisions....

haha! My parents do from their 1.6 Skoda Diesel just to make it that little bit cooler and faster :) they hate cars with a passion in case that's not obvious!
Since the engine would be working a 'bit' harder the V8 would sound even better with a caravan....?

Oh dear! I was planning on driving down to Monaco if we get one - I think my wife would be hoping to be staying in a hotel or boat, not a caravan, but she is adaptable :)
