I was about to say 'plan for the worse' i.e. your car will stop sooner or later... better it happen whilst you are still in control of the situation.

That's either recovery home or to a specialist local to you currently... happened to me 5 years back, fortunately at the hotel and near to Bazel

Just coming back to close the loop on this. Went silent and tried to enjoy the holiday without wheels and left the car parked up for a while.

Eventually took it in gingerly to the nearest main dealer in France for a diagnostic read for any fault codes. They suggested doing a recode/relearn for the clutch (not entirely sure what that involves). Remarkably, that seems to have fixed the problem and made it back to the U.K. yesterday on its own steam, and able to find first gear even after a long 900km run. Only factors that may be different for the drive back are that I drove far more conservatively and through the night so 1) didn’t encounter any traffic and 2) it was far cooler than the day it had issues (15 degrees vs 35). Those probably help but it was a world apart for the run back. Not sure that’s the end of it all but for now am left confounded, infuriated and delighted by the car. And quarantined for good measure. Thanks to all for the suggestions, will be getting it looked at again as soon as I’m allowed out.

When I first picked up my 2010 MC-Shift 26.5k mile, mine couldn't find 1st once but this was on an incline and in AUTO. I've since not had any issues with manual operation. However, I do understand that the gearbox ECU can 'relearn' and I think mine done this as the car was not driven for a period while in the dealership. I'm no expert but the PIS may need recalibrated on your's.

This! Glad you got sorted, of sorts

Marios May correct me but not a Million miles different to my experience then. As in nothing physically broken and all sorted via a laptop.

Glad you look to have it fixed

Glad to hear you made it, fortune favours the brave. Unless fluid is bleeding or metal falling, sometime have to trust your senses.

My QP duoselect gave up in southern France and was AA recovered home. Similar system in both cars, my symptoms were intermittent gear selection + falling out of gear at speeds! Fault was the F1 pump (or more likely the electric motor for said pump). It did get better if I gave it a rest. Presumably as that allowed the tired / inefficient pump to build pressure. Sure any decent maserati tech can check your car back in UK.

There were two fault codes identified: P1777 and P1778. There’s every chance my French is doing a total disservice to the technician’s attempts to explain things to me (he spoke no English and my French is abominable) so forgive me but those codes I think are insufficient pressure for the F1 pump and possibly a leak. He corrected those and advised to have them checked again back here and he that didn’t think they were that severe or the reason for the problem given how very marginally the pressure was low considering the miles done on the journey down.

Welcome any thoughts from anyone aware of those codes or how pump pressure would manifest in those symptoms just for 1st and reverse after a long run.

those codes might be familiar , or I am just asking the story fit. Will check my history file. my codes P1772, P1770, P1769
My own car was checked before European trip and diagnosed as "possible gear shift sensors". The occasional gear selection did not work, but frequency of these misses increased. After 5-6 days hard driving the fault changed to dropping out of gear. Car would recover after a breather until it failed to proceed.

According to Google it's a 3-2 solenoid issue and clutch position sensor. All of which makes perfect sense but could be totally wrong

Some good clutch news for a change, delisted for you. The leak I suspect would be the F1 pipe, rear of the gearbox.

Good news, and hopefully an adjustment was all it needed. Worth getting the gearbox and F1 fluid levels checked I'd have thought now your home.

That would have been a nightmare while abroad on a family holiday etc...
I must ask.... How much did a French MD charge an Englishman for an emergency diagnostic check and clutch learn? :worried1:

It was fully serviced before you went so I would be speaking with them and checking your invoice as to what was exactly done.
A Big difference between a Lube service and a Major service.
The cost will answer your questions.

I had exactly the same problem word for word as the OP described with my 2011 Granturismo MC.

Fortunately the fix is relatively inexpensive for a Maserati.

The problem is the Gearbox actuator and you will need a Maserati expert to carry out an actuator internal bleed as well as checking and reposition the bypass screw on valve body. I was charged 3 hours labour as there is a bit of work involved in removing the exhaust, rear cross member and gearbox mount to remove the gearbox actuator and repair it.

I can't thank the guys enough at Automotion in Brisbane Australia for sorting this for me.

I have waited 3 months before posting this into the forum to make sure everything works perfectly but it always slots back into 1st at every request now. It was also previously having an issue by not selecting 5th gear but this has also been resolved with the gearbox actuator fix. Hope this helps :)
