Fantastic Doc, what a way to treat yourself! It looks awesome, it really looks the part and I bet it sounds that way too. Some people have a problem with the various GT40 replicas but these days quite a few of the companies making them also supply parts to owners of the real McCoy, which says a lot. I would love one if I had the funds, I sat in a very nicely built Mk1 replica at Stoneleigh last year and it felt 'right' somehow. A few years ago I was driving home from the NEC classic show along the A45 between Coventry and Rugby when I was overtaken by three GT40 reps, they were going like the clappers and the noise was incredible, it's something I'll never forget.

At last year's NEC show there was gorgeous MkIII replica for sale, I couldn't take my eyes off it....

It's nice to see the one you drove on 15'' BRMs, they look so much better than the 17s that some of them have.

I’ve known about CAV GT40’s for years and even requested a brochure some time back.

Brilliant machines and something I’d possibly like to explore some day.

You're effectively getting a brand new (or nearly new) car with all the character and panache of something that's decidedly 'old school'....

A real GT40 from 1966....

A real replica GT40 from Tornado Sportscars....

I'd be happy as a pig in poo with either and I feel the same way about Lancia Stratos replicas, the Hawk and Lister Bell versions are wonderful creations.

That is a lovely thing, I hope you push the button....... I would if I could.

A business acquaintance of mine has a genuine Ford GT (they couldn’t use the 40) its for sale at the moment, that pushes 700bhp and I imagine is un drivable.

A completely different car, but I had a recreation / replica of an Aston DBR1 - too quality hand built car - not a kit car. I loved it but did spend a lot of time and eventually got fed up of answering the question “is it a real one?” or is that a “kit car”.

I know, strange picture... trying to be arty
Looks just like all the promo shots of stock used by the dealer Tom Hartley. He has a slightly submerged platform he photographs all his stock on to make them appear floating. In fact I can just see his sign at the top of the picture, so that’s exactly where this was taken

I think we are coming to the end of the era of N/A ICE sportscars with a manual box and was looking for something raw to add to my road collection as the DB4 is not road legal.

I tried an Atom and BAC Mono, then by chance came across this GT40 replica. With my Le Mans connections it’s seemed to fit the bill so went to see it for a test drive........

Frack me! 430bhp with less than a tonne to propel. No ABS, power steering, traction control or driver aids whatsoever. Just a huge pushrod V8, 5 speed manual box and rose jointed suspension. This is not some cheap and nasty kit car with a Q plate, but a CAV factory built replica with no expense spared and a proper 1960’s age appropriate registration.

Zero practicality but probably the most exciting thing I have driven on the road ever. Made my DB4 seem civilised and slow. Think I’m hooked and waving goodbye to best part of £100k next week!

Is that one owned by someone (at the moment) at Lotus?

And some more shots of a Tornado rep, they do two versions, one with a spaceframe chassis and glassfibre central tub, and one with a steel / alloy central monocoque as per the real McCoy....
