You lot get out and about. Thinking about Hawaii in September but want to avoid Honolulu and experience the natural wonders. Diving, sailing, volcanos, bit of hiking, maybe a helicopter etc.

Any reccomendations for itinerary/places to stay/ unusual / special things to do?

My wife and I loved Hawaii. You can’t go wrong. I wouldn’t discount Honolulu. All the islands can offer something unique. Make sure you see the Palace, Pearl Harbour etc. Am sure some guys on here have spent a lot of time there so they will give better advice.

I’m sure I read recently that the Us government was strongly advising us Brits to stay well clear of Huawei. Never been myself but I did skydive with the Mrs once and suggest you give it a try.

Try Kauai for that kind of stuff. Quite a few years since I was there but it’s great for nature, whale watching, scenery, diving etc. It’s where they shot some of the Jurassic Park scenes. We also did a helicopter tour which was very good indeed. Also enjoyed Maui but a bit more commercial. Did an amazing mountain bike trip there from the top of a volcano !

That's our happy place! Been 3 times.
One trip we did a 7 night cruise around the islands. Travel between islands overnight and wake to a new port each day to spend time ashore. Cruised past the Jurassic Park valley. Last trip was just to Honolulu for shopping. Did a day tour of the island.
Next time we will do the helicopter trip, as we discovered how good they were we did the Grand Canyon flight out of Las Vegas.
Shopping, get to the factory outlets at Waikele. Motels offer shuttle buses there & back. We caught Mother's Day last trip. My wife bought a $1,200 USD handbag for $200 USD at the Coach store. Downtown store wasn't nearly as well priced.
Also you must get a meal at The Cheesecake Factory.
Enjoy your trip.

OK 2017 we did a big US tour mainly R66 but we started in Hawaii.

Honolulu is a great place to see , especially the beaches but other than that it is a normal loud American city. On the other hand the North shore of O'ahu is simply stunning, quite location with big rolling waves into lovely beaches, it's what you imagine Hawaii to be. We moved onto the big Island, Hawaii, because we wanted to see Volcanos. The west side is rocky and full of old volcanic flows, but there are some lovely golf resorts built into the landscape and the weather is fantastic. The East side gets much more weather and can vary from rain through to perfect sunshine, it is much lushier, more tropical with waterfalls and active volcanos. In the middle is the mighty Mauna Kea the biggest mountain in the would if you measure from its base at the bottom of the sea. Even it land projection is over 13000ft topped with telescopes that peer across the universe. It is an awesome place.

I will post some phots later, I always wanted to see a volcano larva flowing into the sea and I wasn't disappointed. I would happily live in Hawaii but not on O'ahu get out see the other islands they are stunning

I worked in Hawaii on the Hickham airforce base at Pearl Harbour in99/00. It was fantastic. A lovely mix of colonial Britain with Chinese and Japanese over Polynesian with a strong American overlay. So the food is incredible, the people are very laid back and friendly. Waikiki is the main drag and likely where you would stay on Oahu but go along the coast and you can snorkel among amazing fish, turtles etc. I drove out to see the sunrise on the east coast and found a deserted airfield in the north and got a glider flight for $25. Down side back then was all the crack whores looking for business. I’d heed advice and go multi islands for your stay.

To fit in with the locals remember to live like they do. Wear an Hawaiian shirt, use Hawaiian Tropic sun cream, and eat Hawaiian pizza. That way they won’t spot you as being a tourist.
