Hello All,

I am new to this forum and got pointed here from Pistonheads. After years of Porsche ownership I am gearing up for the leap into a Grantursimo. I currently have a 997 turbo cab which is a keeper for now, but a new job means low miles for my family car and I have fallen in love with the idea of a GT-S MC Shift to run alongside the Porsche due to looks, noise, and feel good factor. I live in the south east on the outskirts of South West London (Surrey) so interested to know your views on dealers in the vicinity, any advice on what to look for or avoid, running cost annual budget. Also anyone else who currently or previously ran Porsche's and can compare the running cost / reliability, or hearing from anyone who just wants to say "Hi"!

Cheers,

c4sman

Bienvenue C4Sman...........glad to see you're finally seeing the light.......GTs have a very good reputation, hold value well, the odd one has a few faults, they drive well, sumptuous interiors and the 4.7s the one to go for.........enjoy when you buy, do post lots and come along to an event or two.

They are supercars with commensurate costs attached.

Definitely aiming for the 4.7. Enjoyed the MC Shift more than the auto when I did back to back drive at Marenello.

They are nothing like a 911, personality totally different - its not built by germans for a start so its not hewn from stone. But its a feeling you get only with an Italian.

Welcome to the forum c4sman, a good choice the GT and a lot more soul and personality than any Porsche on the planet. Nobody looks at a Porsche go past, there are that many, everybody looks at a Maserati, they are just special..!!

Hi c4sman, you've found the right place so welcome to the forum.
Great choice and can recommend without hesitation the GTS- MC Shift.
I've had mine for nearly 18 months and came from 12yrs of 996 ownership, the last 7 in a 996 Turbo. Admittedly my 996's were everyday/only cars and the turbo takes some beating as I'm sure you'll know! The 911 Turbo's are basically a missile on wheels but somewhat souless and they sound very ordinary.
The best way to decsribe the Masser (IMO) is "it's an event" every time you even start it up. The sense of occasion is just something that no Porsche can match. Mine has given me no trouble (touch wood!) other than a couple of silly little niggles.
My only reservation so far has been the brake feel. The GTS has massive Brembo brakes (extremely expensive on the front) and whilst they are plenty powerful enough the pedal feel is pretty poor. Some of this is me needing to adapt/change my driving style but others have said similar and even MD agrees to some extent.
I used Meridien Modena in Lyndhurst and they have been first class. Running costs have been pretty non existant so far apart from a set of winter tyres just purchased I haven't had any costs. I'm expecting first service (early next year) to be around £1200. So far cheaper than any of my Porsches to run, other than fuel of course.
I'm also in the South East (S. Oxon), your welcome to have a browse around mine, which is quite well specced so would give you an idea of options/spec to look out for.
Good luck in your search, oh and just in case don't forget the noise!!!!
Cheers Blu

I agree that driving a Maserati is certainly 'special' in a way Porsche doesn't do. The GTS even has rear seats unlike the Porsches so call rear seats.

Thanks for the post Blu, just the type of info I was looking for, and would love to take a look around yours one day. Sounds like you have had a good experience with meridian so far and they are on my list dealers to buy from. What sort of age and miles did you buy. I am planning to buy in the spring to skip this years need for winter tyres, and I am going to try to stretch to a 2010 car with approximately 20k on the clock. Do you guys do meets that I could drive out to and take a look at your motors. If so I hope I wouldn't be lynched in the car park for turning up in a 911 :blushed:

Don't worry, you can always park it a couple of streets away to avoid embarrassment!

I will come in my wife's Golf 1.4 to save the shame of it.;)

But seriously, and at risk of getting beaten up, Porsches are also great cars. They don't have the character of the GT or the exclusivity, but they can be thrilling to drive and incredibly capable and reliable. That's why they are not as exclusive as a lot of people appreciate those qualities, as do I. Doesn't stop me being very exited about owning a Maserati in a few months time!

No problem, 911's are indeed very capable vehicles and anyone who has driven one will agree they are technically brilliant drivers cars. You will get your leg pulled on here though as there is a lack of soul that goes with them sadly, just seeing a Maserati warms the heart, hearing and even driving one thrills it, owning one assures it and can break it but allows you to know what it is all about. Nothing comes close.
