Help Needed! 2008 GranTurismo issue - Solenoid or Variator?

Hi All, thanks in advance for any help anyone is able to provide :) :omg:

I have just bought a Maserati Granturismo 57 plate 32,000 miles privately.

The car clearly has an issue as the engine management light comes on now and again. The car makes a strange rumbling noise in very low speeds, almost as if it is about to stall although it never actually does. The car is automatic but the noise feels as if I was in 4th gear in a manual pulling up to a stop.

I have taken the car into HR Owen for a full service & to highlight any issues. They have said that it is a variator solenoid issue and will cost £1000+ to sort. I have also since taken it to a specialist who is saying not sure it is solenoid, could be the variator and if so, is a 20hr job with parts 1k+ alone.

Is there any way to work out whether it is the solenoid or the variator? (I hope tis makes sense, i am way out of my depth really). The car drives absolutely fine in higher speeds

Any help or advice would be very very helpful

Welcome JGC,
Not sure it is a variator issue, the noise would be there all the time and a Solenoid costs no where near a grand. Where do you live and which specialist have you spoken to..?? is the noise definitely engine, or could it be gearbox..??
Cheers
