Hi all, my 2002 3200 auto has twice now over the last couple of weeks failed to start/turn over for no reason seems like! All the lights go out turn the key and nothing...the key turns as should but nothing no sound no resistance just nothing. The first time it happened we was head scratching for ages trying all sorts with no success then rolled it forward heard a click and then started first time. This time around same thing rolled forward an inch and started up! Just had a major service but I can't think anything has happened on that front, but I just done a little test on the drive and when the hand brake is put on it doesn't start......we had a new hand brake sensor/pad etc at the service, would this be anything?

Many thanks in advance.

I would take it back to the garage who serviced it and get them to put it on there diagnostic machine and see if it thrown up a code , try and be there and see the code for your self if its to do with there work get them to fix it , if it isn't than at least you know what the cause is .

Hi,

I don't have an auto but from memory this sounds like it might be handbrake and/or park microswitch related. I wouldn't be surprised if the switch contacts have been either swapped or have failed on the handbrake or gearbox selector because it sounds like the interlock might not be disconnecting. Did the car previously require the handbrake to be on and park selected to start?

On the other hand..... It might be something else entirely!

Thanks, it had worked all ok before with no problem with starting. It does sound as it's linked to the new handbrake pads fitted as it's runs spot on otherwise

Handbrake / park interlock at a guess. Not intimately familiar, but my guess would be that by rolling it forward you're moving something that is required for permission to start.

I had problems with the rotary position sensor on the gearbox. Have you tried just putting it in gear and back to park and try again? or even put it in neutral as it will start in neutral too. there are two switches that affect the starting one is on the side of the gearbox and it gets exposed to weather, you can see it from underneath the car, its about £90 to replace. There is a little switch down the bottom of the gear lever and it only detects park position. I replaced this but it had no effect. its a real pain to get at!! you should be able to see this down through the gear-lever gaiter, you can also activate it with a long screw driver to see if its causing the problem? I am not aware of any link between the handbrake and the car starting. so any thing caused by the work on the handbrake is accidental, i would think. I have driven off with the handbrake on.
