RACE SERIES FOR TIPO 184. Following our post about Ant Anstead's recreation of a 1950s Alfa Romeo Grand Prix car (out of a Mazda MX5 no less!) the BRSCC have announced a race series for the cars! Just imagine 20 of these cars barrelling into Redgate! The following statement appears on the BRSCC website.
The innovative Tipo184 will be one of the world’s most cost-effective ways into classic race car ownership, it has been announced. Prices for the beautiful self-build kits, which are based on economical and easy-to-source Mazda MX-5 running gear, have been set at just £16,450.

Brainchild of TV personality Ant Anstead and experts at Dowsetts Classic Cars, the Motorsport UK-compliant Tipo184 evokes the Alfa Romeo 158, driven by Juan Manuel Fangio in the 1950s, widely regarded as one of the most successful race cars of all time.

Tipo184 owners will be able to take part in a new race series, run in partnership with the British Racing & Sports Car Club (BRSCC). Billed as one of the most affordable single seater race series in the world, the series will start as a UK-based set of track days, culminating in a demo-race at Cadwell Park. The planned race format for 2022 will consist of a 15-minute qualifying session followed by two 15-minute races at major circuits across the UK. Plans are also in progress for race series in Europe and the US.

The Tipo184 starter kit can be purchased directly at www.tipo184.com and is available globally, with customers in the US and Europe now able to take advantage of heavily reduced shipping costs because of new collaborations with local chassis manufacturers. Limited build slots for 2021 are still available.FB_IMG_1615653359223.jpgFB_IMG_1615653364323.jpg

Someone on here bought the BMW powered Tipo 250 to the meet up we had at Dick Lovett's in Swindon for a Saturday morning meet up probably 10 years ago now.

No Longer Available. Andy Peace who designed and made the car put it up for sale in 2013, I think to fund another project, and he subsequently closed the company. He took it to DL's on a very wet Saturday, and as Phil says that would have been nearly 10 years ago. IIRC the demonstrator was offered at around £70k and did find a new home.

So it’s £15k for the kit plus an MX5 plus building it and you end up with the track only equivalent of a Fiero F40 or MR2 355.

Where as you could actually go out and buy a proper historic single seat racing car that’s eligible for everything

If you look at the pictures of the Alfa at the start of the thread, and then compare them to that yellow thing, you’ll understand why.

As a rep this is probably eligible for nothing, but 'tis nice

True. But what a pretty frock it’s now wearing!
Might have to see if an Alfa engine can be made to fit. (Though I imagine Ant would have checked that already.)

This was my thought too. To have an Alfa engine too would lift it for me.

I think it's lovely but finding somewhere to use it might be a challenge other than the race series, tracks days often ban race cars and I suspect they would consider this as such

I thought this looked like a great idea, particularly the race series, but apparently I don't fit, too tall!

I checked out Ants show, in which he build this replica, some time ago. I'm pretty sure it was based on an MG chassis with an alfa engine. I believe he must be involved in some way with the firm that's produced the kit using mx 5 bits. The original build was tricky with the engine being set at an angle to enable the prop shaft etc to locate to one side. Just vague recollections really. I must admit it looks great and I'm now thinking of perhaps getting an Austin 7 Ulster or similar. Charming and fun! Not as quick though!
