Is it the case that the handbrake shoe failure is due to parking up post wash when shoes are wet and they then seize? The driving off later then shears the pad from the back plate. It happened to me about eight years ago and I have never parked up with wet brakes again; to date the problem hasn’t reoccurred.

Yeah thats the reason in a nutshell , happens to my Landcruisers all the time in Africa , they get washed and prepped and put away whilst im in Uk , several months later after my return one or the other will have that exact problem ...............

I've started looking in to modifying my exhaust which looked completely standard, I mean 4 cats, center resonator with x-pipe plus standard back boxes.
My DIY plan was to delete back boxes, replace the resonator with my custom x-pipe and delete second cats.
Everything was ok until I took out the front section with four cats and discovered that all the "cat boxes" are empty. I hope someone will be able to explain to me why I haven't got check engine light??? I suppose that's got something to do with the third sensor which is somehow connected to the second lambdas. On eurospares it's nr 194744
Please see the pictures for reference.
Thanks in advance

I had the same thing when I bought my 4200 over 5 years ago... Came to do the cats to only find the stock ones completely hollow... No CEL and a clean MOT (???!!!)

The guy found lots of cat debree lodged in the stock x pipe so the theory is that it deteriorated and blew out of the exhaust over time - better than the alternative... and yes I have had an engine oil analysis afterwards to confirm no damage was done

I think someone was there before me and removed the inner parts on purpose as I can see they were welded.

If the cats were already gutted what I did is empty all the OEM ones and install a sports cat center section and locate the lambdas there.

I have a pair of rear 4200 custom made straight through stainless steel rear sections fabricated for my 4200 by Autoshield.

Just been removed as I replaced them with a valved Larini setup as I wanted an option for loud and quieter rather than just loud.

I've only done a couple of thousand miles on them so they are not far off as new. Was going to pop them on eBay at some point but not got to it yet.

Increases the sound a fair bit and gives the added benefit of a massive weight reduction replacing those hefty rear boxes.

I believe @jasst had a similar thing with his GS, no cats and no CEL, for a while....
Not quite I'm afraid, found after I had bought car secondary cats had been removed, but lambda's left in same place, I got a cel about every 250 miles, had 200cel sports cats fitted and second Lambda re located to after the sports cats, but still get the cel at varying mileage, just living with it at the moment. I have a set of standard cats which I had to buy to get it through the mot last year as failed on emissions, was going to re-fit them and run it like that to see what happens, but I CBA to do it at the moment, and my MOT man says he can get it through as it is ;)

Ok I know , but could it alter the fuel/air ratio together with second lambda to the point it doesn't trigger CEL?
I've noticed that it's also used on the Trofeo.

Pretty sure it has no effect on fuel / air as it was deleted from later iterations (from memory)

I've managed to made that section weldless in stainless steel with 3" tips for less than £150 a side

Ah, dodgy memory then. I thought your primaries were gutted, but the lambdas left in the original position. Must have been someone else!

The thermocouple is to measure exhaust temp (obvs) for the purposes of knowing if the cats are warm and working. The front lambdas are to regulate the engine fuelling and the rears are to check that the cats are actually doing something. Well, they are supposed to be anyway.

You are right, this is what I inherited , but brings in a whole new question. According to my exhaust Guru, the first cats in the system are pre-cats (400cel), the second cats are in fact the primary's (600 cel)
