Well I finally decided to remove the inlet manifold to get it repainted as the paint was flaking off here's a pic of it removed ( it wasn't that bad but after some jet washing loads more came off )

It was quite easy to remove i would say allow 2 hours inc tea breaks

So off to the painters there have told me there can do any colour in crinkle finish , let's hope so !
I have also bought some high temp Ferrari red enamaul paint which Iam going to try to paint the rocker covers in situ there not to bad but could do with Brighten up by masking every thing up any way we will see . I'll post up a after pic and cost once I get the inlet back .

I'm doing the very same thing at the moment. However, I've taken the opportunity to take the covers off and put new gaskets on. I've redone the plenum chamber in the same red as the covers so it will all match and I'm replacing all the fastenings with stainless.

I also will be replacing the bolts with st/steel as I have pretty much every size under the sun at work . So paint the covers in situ than replace the painted bolts with shiney new st/steel ones . Look forward to seeing your results

The inlet manifold on mine also has got a bit flakey along with the covers over the coil leads.

I'll get it done this winter but prefer black as below

Why? It looks sh!t as standard. What does the gold 'tie in' with?

I have no idea you would have to ask Maserati that question the reason I want to keep it looking stock it's a bit like if you have a pre face lift car or it has over 50k or hasn't got a full Maserati history to the minute or is different in any shape or form than it would be absolutely worthless not even scrap money , well according to what I like to call the "forum bankers " ! And plus I quite like the gold makes it look different from any other engine bay .

I don't think it matters what colour you paint it be it red ,black or gold it's a personal preference but alas there will always people who think every thing should be keeped as Maserati intended .

Several letters of the alphabet away from where they are normally described :)

Wow it looks a lot better in that black! The original colour is awful haha

I wouldn't worry about changing the colour from original from something like that...

Isn't the cast alloy inlet manifold a piece of Beauty as opposed to the later engines plastic ones.
For me I like it in Black I think red will be too much like Ferrari but as mine is in good order it's staying that way.
I await to be abused by BennyD.

Mines got over 70k, it isn't a facelift, it hasn't got a full Maserati history, it hasn't got a standard colour, standard wheels, standard exhaust, standard rear lights, standard bumpers or a standard colour on the plenum and I'm so much happier because of it. I enjoy my car, not use it as some sort of investment and I don't give a dead rats a55 if it gets stone chips or some keyboard warrior declares that it's sh!t because it's not standard. The original gold looks like they ran out of paint and used the first rattle can they found and stuck with it. If you think it looks good go with it and I applaud your tenacity but try BRG, IMO, even that would look better.

I agree totally we what you say and I know yours is a keeper and would never be sold but there will be a day that mine will be so Iam slowly trying to make it one of the best early 4200 out there (2002) and like yours mine is over 50k doesn't have a full Maserati history or a standard exhaust and regularly gets tracked so like your self I enjoy my toy to .

I quite like the gold... *runs and hides* The black looks nice, but I think there is something special about the gold. I guess it's a little bit of crazy on an otherwise classy and quite reserved looking car. Plenty of cars have black under the bonnet, how many have gold?

On the other hand, mine is never going to be the best example - crossed 69k miles at the weekend and did 200 since, so it'll be completely worthless soon enough. Also it's a face lift, is silver, and it's a manual, with a non-standard exhaust, so the number of potential buyers is restricted to those who like all the less popular bits like me! I actually feared owning a perfect example as I wanted to use it, not invest in it.

If I were repainting, I'd prefer gold, but probably wouldn't go out of my way for it. Silver would probably look good with my car already being silver on the outside, and would contrast with the red bits too.
Would like to see a totally red one mind!

Come on guys, show us your inlet manifolds :p

Well actually I like the gold too!
Looking forward however to seeing what red looks like.
Black, no, not for me.

Little update , manifold is at the painters so in the mean time I decided to do the cam covers, striped the paint off which was a right bugger than painted with VHT wrinkle finish paint , so far so good .

Picture is about 30 mins after painting as you can see it's still drying .
