So you turn the lights on and all is fine for 30 seconds or so then it goes out. Doesn’t come back on unless you stop the engine and restart. Repeat. Checked for loose wiring nada. Is it a sign that the xenon bulb is on the way out. Nothing as easy as that no doubt. Gah! Help always appreciated.

Make sure you disconnect the battery and discharge the ballast before you touch... they hold enough amps to seriously hurt you.

Joules, surely, and I don't think they can actually store much?

Thanks all. I’m not sure I want to mess with that!

Fitted loads and never had an issue, but you certainly want to make sure they are off before you mess with the HV side (85kv from memory?)

Ok so from the parts list it looks like the bulb comes with ballast as a single unit so will order and follow your helpful advice. Cheers all (unless I electrocute my t!ts off).

My main light went out n/s. I took it to a specialist and they said you cant buy a ballast separate so i had to have a headlight unit. The unit was expensive so they sourced a refurb unit.

So is the ballast definitely a separate item and not integrated into the Phillips D3S 35w bulb? Cheers M

The ballast sits underneath the headlight unit... there are normally on ebay for sale.

So I decided to hope for the best and just change the bulb. Fvck me what a pain in the ringer! Anyway, the odd thing is that it’s done the trick. Still, non the wiser as to whether the bulb has integrated ballast or not. 89772897738977489775

It doesn’t look like it’s integrated. There are seperate ballasts listed on eBay.

It’s a weird one. I did see what I assumed to be the ballast under the fitting but the new bulb has solved the issue. Just as well as I didn’t have the tools/triple jointed fingers required to get it out. Fingers crossed as it is a lot of work just to change a friggin bulb. Might have to get an old motor just for the ease of popping the bonnet and unclipping the back of the light!

That’s an all in one bulb and starter (like the round canister on a fluorescent tube) There should be a box somewhere else that houses the control unit/ballast.
