I think its a shame the last 30 years has seen the demise of the car accessory shops ( not your Halfords shiiite ) there used to be some really good ones , i think the reason being Manufacturers started specking some cars a bit different from the norm , hence our lethargic younger generations got sucked in with easy credit to want it and buy and have now must have. Was a common site to guys working on cars outside their houses etc , Kids are conscious now not to have the latest whatever gizmo including cars , all they seem to do is add a heinz bean can to the exhaust and they think they are Lewis Hamilton , perhaps now credit will get tight , car manufacturers will struggle to down size and remodel, and with any luck Brexit will put high tarriffs on European imported cars , i would love to see a new generation mucking about with Carlos Fantango wheels , scoops to handle the added twin choke webbers etc , great fun days and appreciating the monster you had created , whilst everyone else thought you were a dick lol.

Yeah, definitely, been there, worn the trousers etc, still dicking about with cars, although the carlos fandango look is something I have left behind. I couldn't cope with just buying a car and just driving it, all part of the joy for me to be constantly fettling .

I've always said, progress as perceived by the general, is not necessarily a good thing.

I remember my first cat, a £375 Ford escort 1300 XL in metallic bronze. I was really proud of that car and spent my spare time doing bits of body work probably very badly. I still love messing with cars. My kids just go out and buy new or nearly new on pcp get them serviced and chop them in for another at the end of the term. I loved, and still do, messing with cars and learning.

For me having past my driving test in 79 it was a Great time with magazines like Car and Car Conversions that not only covered Motorsport and did reviews but gave you Great advice on how to make your car better.
The accessory and performance shops were plentiful and we had a fantastic one in Gloucester called City Speed where you could get your twin 40s and Cibie lights to an ex works Rallycar.
Spent many hours there and some cash and again as much free advice as you wanted from the owner Alan Baker who used to build the Works Ford's at Boreham.
Quality parts from everywhere bar China.
In the 90's Max Power the Internet and Chavs say no more.

Good Times indeed he was a life time honourary member of our Motor Club which was 143 MC which used to be the map reference for Gloucester.
Another Good one too was Hooper's of Bristol in Hanham.

Always fancied being a car fettler but never learned even the basic the skills, and probably ruined a few cars trying. The closest I came to having mechanic skills was in the late 70s with a cortina mk3 and a mash hammer under the bonnet to gently get the starter to work every morning lol

A set of new brushes would have sorted that back in the day when we repaired things.
Being a Mechanic has kept me out of trouble for 40 years and taken me around the World.
Being the oldest of 8 boys and the only one Trade qualified all the others in the IT industry I'm the poorest but I'm sure I'm the happiest and certainly free.

I'm exactly the same. But I've been promising to by an old banger and teach myself for years. Still haven't got around to it yet....

My second car was a1974 Escort 1300XL in bronze with a vinyl roof! Bought "racing"seat covers for it because I couldn't afford proper seats. Wanted a GT or E variant but couldn't afford that.
