KNOCK SENSORS - 2001 3200GT - need 2 new sensors - can I use from another OEM?

Friends,

I am based in South Africa, where my 32GT now needs 2 new knock sensors. Unfortunately, original spares are currently not available in the country.

I would order from overseas (any tips for global suppliers with fastest lead times?), but what would really help is your view on this question:

Is there perhaps a way to use a part from another OEM, like Alfa, that will fit & work just as well? Other OEM dealers in South Africa might have spares and could ship much much faster than international suppliers...

Thanks so much for your thoughts
Boris

Yes you can,Bosch do a generic one, though the connector on the end will need swapping,

Thanks for the ideas - I will try the A166 ones and see if that works well - in case you are interested in how it goes, I will try to come back and post how it went...

Alfa supplies several (V6?) knock-sensors, the output is different. Does anyone have the Alfa-partnumber?

Shop4parts sell the 3 litre V6 166 knock sensor for £28.35 plus vat and Eurospares show stock of the 3200 Knock sensors at £42.54 plus vat. Is is not worth the risk of fitting the Alfa Romeo sensor unless we can be sure it is compatible and know the part number.

I would be cautious using non standard parts for one reason only, how would you know if they are working right? The ECU uses the knock sensors to advance the ignition as far as it can for a given fuel and the cars present condition. The 3200 is very active in the engine control, making it often variable to drive. If the output is slightly different then you can get either ignition advance too little - so less power than is possible, or advance too much and have pinking everytime you open it up potentially destroying the engine prematurely. and this risk for a saving of £26. I thought about it but having replaced my knock sensors, and i used the Maserati parts from Eurospares.

I have to agree with Davy. IMO, reversing sensors are ok to swap but knock sensors aren't. They might be ok but, personally, I wouldn't take the risk.

Friends, thanks for your advice.
I used Alfa 166 knock sensors. The car drives, but I still feel lack of power. I now ordered original spares through eurospares, which I will then get fitted.
In the meantime, however, I am noticing another issue that it would be good to get your advice on:

There is no turbo charging right now. Is there a simple way to diagnose whether the turbos work alright (or the electronics triggering the turbos)? How would I go about diagnosing and fixing this?

Thanks again for all your advice so far... best wishes,
Boris
