I only used two gears - 2 and 3. Even though I was in "manual" , the car changed up by itself when it hit the red line and I jacked it back into 2 after braking into the corners. Quite disconcerting to see the pads smoking when I came in!

Apparently my brakes were smoking somewhat as well, my XJ seemed more than happy to pull 2nd 3rd 4th and a touch of 5th before pilling the anchors on, but it is an 8 speed box, shame I destroyed my front tyres after only 2 sessions.

Your XJ was epic. Seeing you brake for the bus top and scrubbing off the speed was awesome.

Brilliant.

I was following you for a couple of laps. You were pulling away in the straight and the big car held its composure very well.

I only closed the gap on the corners especially the bus stop.

Having a manual is bloody hard work. I really should have been shifting to 5th on the straights. But I couldn’t be bothered. So I just kept it in 3rd and then 4th which limited my speed on the straights as I ran out of revs.

Cheers to Andy for arranging another superb Llandow day....Thanks Andy.
Great time other than a box full of neutrals occasionally, worked fine when driving properly round the track and seems ok now so will follow Matt's advice and replace the battery first!
Thanks to Hoyin for taking me round in the Noble, great fun and way more nimble than the lardy GT although it hustled round there ok.
Put me down for the next one Andy
Cheers

It was really quiet about 3 onwards and I'd run the vx220 low on fuel (and the flames have started melting the rear number plate!) so sneaked a few sessions in our stripped out cupra project :)

Plan is to start doing time trials with it next year.

Definitely up for a next time.

I used 2nd out of the bus stop into third for the right before the first long straight then fourth. Then back to third into the chicane and around to the pit entrance then fourth again. braking at the 100m board into the bus stop. I tried to use second onto the pit straight but my rears had no grip until I got into third so I kept it in third. It seemed a lot smoother and more stable that way...

Mainly the car dictates the approach but i use third around the bus stop and it works much better for me. If you haven't got much torque second is the best for sure but third gives you a 'softer' throttle to balance the car on the slow corners and saves a change after devils elbow. Fourth on the back straight, third on the chicane and back to fourth on the pit straight braking at the 50 on both straights.

Braking at 50? Dinner plate brakes, or no weight, certainly not a lack of speed!

How does anyone think of all that while going round?

They only thing that's going on in my head is F... F... F... F...,

Physically it's mash the throttle, mash the brake, clench buttocks and turn!

Car is around 800kg :)

Runs Pagid RS14 pads but the discs are actually cheap eurocarparts and the pads are so aggressive the discs become the consumable. I think I'm on my third set of fronts to one set of pads.

Much more important though it's the tyres, they have such dry grip that you can stand on the brakes all day.

The silver VX turbo which was there runs much larger 4 pot brakes but I've never felt the need to upgrade.

I can't see how it would be a battery issue either. Got to be worth checking a few simple easy things first.

Check the relay operation and pump and also gearbox fluid level. Has it been changed for a while?

Just stay calm, drive slowly first and learn the turn in points, apex and exit. Build up speed and brake later till you see God, then back off.
