Maserati at Indy

Digging deep into esoteric Maserati history, I have come across an interesting footnote. Seems that Al Unser passed his Indy rookie test in 1965 in a Weismann-Maserati. An ugly spud, it was an early mid-engine design powered by a modified 4.2 Mas V8. Unser passed his test, but the car didn't qualify for the race.
The car still exists, and is owned (incomplete) by a guy in Seattle WA.

Anyway, thought you guys would be interested.

Thanks! Never heard of this racing effort. Was that car entered in any other race?

Not that I could find, info is rather thin about the car. I have seen that you are also over on fchat, I really like the history to be found over there, and have tried to post interesting Maserati history here for chaps to enjoy. ML? not so much.

Always like interesting past history and stories, it's all part of the history that make some brands stand out

You are absolutely right that there is little interest in Maserati history in the ML forum, unfortunately. Personally, I think it is a bit odd that one has to go to fchat for the best discussions about the marque's history, but I am happy for the wealth of insight and information provided on that forum.

Further research, the car was purchased by Matthew Wittmier from a storage auction in Seattle, and has been sold to Ray Evernham in Mooresville NC for restoration. Unser said that he remembered that the car handled well, but was down on power, and that they went thru all 3 Maserati engines trying to qualify for the race. If I get near Charlotte, I'll try to go see it, and maybe get more info.

The Indy, of the 60/70s, was named to commemorate wins at the 500. Not all were named after winds.

Sebring, Mexico too...

I was looking at an Indy this morning and this one doesn't seem 'right'. Cheap tyres, rattle can paint underneath, not perfect despite its decription. I suppose it needs to be seen in the flesh... caveat emptor.
