Clearly the pressures of running this site are keeping you up at night!! For me life in the diplomatic service requires long working hours. I'm off now to sort out something easier like the Israeli/Palestinian issues!!!
Too late. Trump has it all figured out.

The SUV of today is no more practical than the estate car of yesteryear. Just people think they need one because the car manufacturers want you to carry more șhit around.
Why does mummy need to drop of her only child in a 3 ton box when a supermini or a walk will suffice. They all wear leggings anyway.
Even the government are now aiming at the SUV as their next tax target and quite rightly. If Top Gear can drive across Botswana in 2wd then why do you need a 4wd in UK

Confession time: I've had a couple of Disco 3Ss when the boys were smaller and we schlepped around a lot with 4 bikes and a ****-ton of camping shite. Whilst I can see the attraction in SUV*s now, it pisses the **** out of me when the ******* things are just used to deposit one child at a school or collect a week of groceries from a supermarket. Pointless waste of space.

Now, an old one that's seen some use, or a new one that uses its four driven wheels, excellent approach and departure angles, clever gearboxes, diff-lockers and impressive axle articulation, that's a lot more interesting.

*ugly imported American expression.

I like the driving position in an SUV (generally) not for any 'superiority' syndrome, just because it is a better place to see all of the road rather than say an Elise

Yeah, but that's like one noisy ******* talking too loudly. Everyone else has to shout to be heard. If everyone drove an Elise, it'd be ok.

Like many of you here I don’t like SUVs because of high center of gravity and handling compromises but sadly I think they are here to stay as a lot of older people like the ease of ingress/egress and as mentioned before yummy mummies feel safe sitting up high.

Give them a city car like a Polo or Mazda 2 and they’ll sneer and say its a shitbox, now take the same car and jack it up a bit(CX3) and now its a desirable affordable car.

Conformity. If you’re an ‘in’ mum, you do the school run in the latest workout leggings, in the most up to date Range Rover. And if you don’t, you’re a lesser being. Perhaps we should point our fingers at society for driving the wrong automotive buying behaviours...

If you have serious lower spine problems, as I do, the high upright seating position in an SUV is hugely more comfortable than any saloon I have drive. Indeed my surgeon told me to buy one or a tall white van! And my hybrid XC90 is averaging about 60mpg

The thing is, the term 'SUV' encompases many different sizes of vehicle these days, from the likes of the RR Velar and its siblings, down to things like Nissan qashqai/ hyundai ix35/ Kia sportage, lots of the with 2wd, and small (1.5L) engines and are no bigger than a large estate, so to my mind, the whole argument against them is total boll**ks.:eek:

Strangely I have to agree with Benny's main point, that it is a pain to be stuck behind one of them as they can be so big, blocking the view.
Case in point the Range Rover that obscured the dead kangaroo in the right lane on the freeway that I ended up hitting last October.
The b@st@rd in the 4WD didn't even swerve or touch the brakes to alert there was danger ahead.
So I hate both 4WDs and the big Utes that are so common out here. Why do city workers in suits feel they have to drive a tradie's vehicle?

Another f*cking SUV. Why? All most of them do is get in your way and block your forward view. Poxy sh!tboxes. In this day and age of environmentalism, they take a lot more raw materials to make, they are harder on the road than an equivalent car and they burn more fuel so the sooner they ban them, the better. The trouble is, is that the average thick Brit aspires to one because it makes them feel important, and the car companies realise this and have tapped into the collective stupidity. If you are towing heavy loads or going off road a lot then fair enough, but hulking great pavement princesses are a pain in the ar5e.
Well I dont want to rain on your parade but I also have a stinking great big Shogun ( for towing stuff) with a big 3.2lt diesel engine which does about 20mpg (if I'm lucky!). Its horribly plasticky and noisy but built like a brick sh$t house. Does what it says on the tin...and it has the added benefit of obscuring the view of those who want to drive too close to my **** end.

Then re-frame the point to be a dislike of pointlessly big SUVs used to drive to a school, a deli, a supermarket, an office or some other mundane journey instead of normal cars on stilts.

Any change in your opinion?

It sounds like you might actually get some use from you 4wd, though. Sorry to rain on your parade, but maybe such a thing serves a more meaningful purpose in your world.

[no irony, no emoji. Sorry]

No worries...also in winter when you can get snow drifts up to 8ft deep around the local lanes and moors , then you do need something a bit robust to get around.

Well a Velar is anywhere from 1,868 to 2,229 kg apparently.....3 tons nah!
Aluminum mainly.....pretty damned rapid too if you want it to be- sub 6 seconds ain’t shabby.
Nobody said they’re more practical and Mummy can drive whatever the **** she wants. Get over it.
Anyway, mines not 4 wheel drive. It’s got 28 wheels plus the 4 it came with. That means it’s used the same global resources as Bennys- apparently.
**** me.

Au contraire; if you have a reason to have such a vehicle then good for you as it would appear you are using it for the purpose it was made. You put up with it’s catastrophic styling because to you it’s a tool, not a fashion statement. If I come up behind such a vehicle, tatty, well worn and agricultural I will quite happily follow it until an overtake presents itself because I appreciate it’s doing a job, not blocking the road for sh!ts and giggles.

Beautiful init... a fine example of “catastrophic styling”.75072
You’d be lucky stuck behind it, admiring its rear

If you look closely you can see the 8 engines It uses.
