OK Dicky you have got the job, when my elusive lottery win comes in you will be one of the first people I ring to source me that perfect McLaren ;)

Alternatively, if I sell the SZ and the Fulvia and chip in my Cayman S fund I could get one now.

Common sense thought: Sell two appreciating cars that cost bugger all to run to purchase a depreciating car that would cost a minimum of £5k per annum (warranty / servicing)

Man Maths thought: McLaren might have hit the bottom of its depreciation curve and will rise over time. Super fast comfortable sportscar now

Head scratch time :)

I take it any decent accident in a carbon tub will be a write off?

I don't think I could ever have any car that I couldn't do at least something with.

Clearly things have improved with the latest generation, no doubt with the benefit of Mercedes technology.
The reason for my comments were based on bodyshops and detailers who heavily criticised the paintwork as being well below standard, although they were equally critical of Ferrari. And the ownership experience of a client who bought a Vantage from new:-
The brake discs needed to be continually skimmed to stop them from squealing like you were dragging an unfortunate pedestrian underneath the car. AM told him it was a sports car and unless you drive aggressively this can be expected.
The rear diff also made some terrible sounds when the car was driven slowly on full lock.
Various electrical gremlins including inoperative Sat Nav.
Then, when as a courtesy to him, I would arrange the garage visits - from memory possibly Stratstones ( you had to do anything you could to keep your clients happy as a Currency Broker ), I questioned the cost of the service when the car was a month old, as so little work was being done, and the advisor agreed and said but we can charge that because our customers can afford it!!
Perhaps to put some clarity into what I said, AM is by its nature not a company with the resources to thoroughly develop out all the little issues that one of the big boys VAG or BMW with Bentley Lamborghini or Rolls Royce can afford to do. This is why previous gen AM's would rely on out of date switchgear and controls from say a Jaguar. Thankfully as I say with Mercedes input these issues are clearly being sorted.
I think Aston's are great British cars, and can definitely take the fight to Ferrari as is the case with McLaren, but when I looked at a Rapids (IMO one of the most stunning four door cars on the road) and discovered a Manuel fly off hand brake and an ex Jaguar Manuel steering wheel adjustment lever I realized they simply didn't have the money behind them to make something truly modern and competitive. But from what your saying it appears they have turned a corner.
Whilst criticised heavily in the U.S the latest Maserati s benefit from the thoroughly developed tech of Chrysler, which is maybe why in my case in nearly four years my Ghibli has remained pretty much fault free.
In summary a small manufacturer needs the benefit of big producer and deep pockets to get all the details right.
I didn’t even consider AM until they paired up with Mercedes. I agree it’s made a difference. The new generation ones have a good balance. All they need to do is hold their money now

I’m a little surprised by your Ferrari reliability comments. I thought they were up to scratch nowadays. Can you give an insight into the problems you experienced?
To be fair it was just some bad luck. Problems with the Cats on the cali shooting off temperate warnings and the gear box fan on the 458 and a couple of electrical gremlins on the Cali hood. Both from main dealers, all covered under the warranty and immediate high level courtesy cars. Not a peep out of the aston

There was a How It's Made: Dream Cars about the people the fly around the world to repair tubs after accidents. I think it was Lamborghini, but could have been someone else.

It's just been on again. Yes it was the Aventador, and no, they aren't just written off.

Incidentally, anyone who's never sat in a convertible Macca with the roof down really should. Even the 'old' 12C has such a sense of theatre about it. They must be a joy to drive and if the dealer / support network was there, non-OEM parts / non-terrifying parts prices (check the price of a 12C battery, just for a laugh) AND they sounded as good as the kind of cars we favour, then I'd be keeping a close eye on 650S spider prices. Sadly none of things are true.

I was at a childrens cancer charity event with supercars a few weeks ago and there were about half a dozen there. I heard someone say a battery was £50k but assumed I had misheard.

It's the P1 battery that's 50k but then it is a million pound hybrid supercar.

A 12c battery is about £2.5k. Which is utter madness.

I have to take my cousin's word for it when he says don't go near a McLaren. The group he works for has BMW, Bentley, Rolls, Maserati, Honda, Kia, Hyundai, Abarth, Citroen, Fiat, Peugeot, Renault, Toyota, Suzuki, Skoda and Land Rover.

And he says McLaren is easily the worst from a client to issue ratio.

And they sound ****.

fookin ell, i'd want it gold plated for that sort of money!

Or delivered by a naked and simpering Nathalie Portman. That would be nice.

Reliability is an issue even if you live near a dealer. Sure, they'll collect etc etc but I want a car which doesn't need fixing in the first place. Assuming the dealer network grows and reliability improves, they still need to sound better than they do.

Like Natalie Portman, I shall continue to look but not touch.
