Ok, I finally got a call back from the owner

He is a trader, and the car is very good. The reason the engine is in bits is due to is swallowing a valve and it being embedded in the piston so you need a new head, valves and end shells, piston and possibly crank damage.

He has had offers of over £9k but he is letting the auction run.

Too much money so its a no go as the new owner is going to pay too much to get here back on the road.

For restorations of this type, you do need it cheap, because as sure as chips are chips something else will pop up to bust your budget, need that £5K cushion....so £6/7K max if body very sound

classic sodium filled valves issue of corrosion and the valve head snapping off.
I think it's killed off a fair few Meraks, but Maserati weren't the only ones to use this as I think the Lambo engine in the urraco may have had them.
Be surprised if the crank had damage, but you never know what happenind at the time it let go. Agree with the comments from Frank tis too much even with a good body.

Alfa used them as well.

yep :) .. still worth keeping an eye on if the body work is in good condition and it is really just the engine that needs sorting, even if he has had good offers he is still letting it run on ebay so it could go for sub 8k?

could do then a unit out of a SM may give some cheap enjoyment until a proper 3.0l could be found.

It's no worse than my old one, OOO 567, and you saw the before pics I posted recently, and the after pics when the owner had it up for sale, finished was stunning, but took six years.
