Hi Guys, looking to pick up a cheap runabout for my wife and was looking at 2007 w221 mercedes s class s500s. Does anyone here own one or have any tips? I had an AMG factory kitted SL500 R230 a few years and I miss the easy laid back drives of the big mercs.

Im curious to see responses. I would think QP is the favourite when it comes to large sedans, at least in this biased (or not!) forum.

I had a 2008 E500. Nice car but lots of niggly faults.

You’d be better with an Audi A8 or a Lexus GS. The 2000’s Merc build quality is terrible. Rusty like a 1980s biturbo.

Don't think I want to run two Masers tho lol! Do love the QP , always wanted one! Probably why I eventually went for the GTS, as I have a range for everyday driving, the GTS feels special for the sunny weekend blasts round the Surrey hills!

W126/140 wonderful, later models not really, plus you will look like an airport taxi. A8 well built but dull. BMW 750i is the way to go; hustles like a 330 but still does the limo thing well enough. QPV the very best way to go but a lot more money to buy and run.69810

Rockits is your man for Mercedes.........I understand the Mercedes thing which I never really got until owning my current 2013 C250. It's better built than any other car I've owned....it's effortless when driver but can be fun for a diesel and has never missed a beat. Done 40k miles in her it 2 years and now it's done 94k looking to changed for an E Class coupe ...the 2012 facelift model.......Also the CL500/CL63 looks a lot of car for the money at early teens.

By the time the W221 came out they’d sorted the rust issues. Interior is a lovely place to be and wears well. Air bags on the suspension can be troublesome but that’s the same with most systems. Electrics are their Achilles heel but that’s the same with A8s and E65s. There’s a reason they get used as taxis and that’s no bad thing.

Yes, I can't see a single reason to choose a 2007 S500 over a 2007-2012 (ZF 4.2) QPV.

Agree re taxi comment in terms of reliability etc. My comment was more around the perception that you are on your way to or from LHR!

not thanks to any modern S class, but I never wanted to blend in or pick up passengers :)
The ZF QP would be number one, and if pushed to choose another maybe the new big Jag XF / XJ

Some of them have adjustable colour interior lighting so you can look like you’re on the way to a Soho knocking shop instead.

The colour combo and condition is excellent. Not sure about the LWB version. If it was a coupe or a tightly suspensioned SWB I would agree.
Agree, but you follow my thinking? From a time when Mercedes built superior cars.

I was very surprised when we moved to Berlin 2005 or so that all taxis seemed to decent spec Mercs, not top of the range, but not far off....

Agreed , my daily hacks for years have been mercs ( washing mouth with soap and water ) the chrysler thing wasnt a good move , now they only make some decent engines , build quality is shiiite for the money
