MRS H WANTS A G WAGON

The title says it all really. She loves big cars / SUVs and has always been a Mercedes fan. And she wants a G Wagon.

I know the following about G Wagons:

  1. They look like they were designed by a 2 year old with a crayon
  2. The fuel efficiency of the diesels is so bad you may as well have the full fat V8
  3. If you don't get the full fat V8 they are dangerously slow
  4. They are good off road (and as such, sh!te on the road)
But they seem reliable and hold their value pretty well so who am I to argue?

Anyone know anything about them? Or anything I should be wary of?

Budget up to £50k but as this will be another toy, I'd rather spend half that.

  1. incorrect.
  2. correct.
  3. Incorrect, the new G350d is more than adequate.
  4. Correct (this Is down to perception IMO)
5. You need to smoke large ring gauge Montecristo‘s whilst driving to look the part.

£25K is very likely LHD territory.

re 3 - not in my budget
re 5 - I prefer Punch Punch

I take it you like them and have driven them? Or owned one? Care to share any insights?

Had a go in the on-site Land Rover Discovery at the Nuclear Power Station I was working at in the 90's, my only go in an off-roader.

The site was huge with lots of land and I took 'off-road', fecking horrible, bouncing like fucck, hit my head on the roof on every bounce (I'm 6' 4"), never again, can't see the fun in it.

I have to agree re styling, very retro boxy looking, interiors used to be very basic with cloth/tartan look. Mine ran around in an ML55 for a few years. The G wagon is a bit of a cult thing.

Got sent on a proper off road course through work, I was of the same mind set as you , until you can actually see and do, what they are capable of. Unbelievable a lot of it.

It's all a cult thing.
Back in the 80's the then current Rangey smashed the G on road and off road.

True but not the landcruiser 70' series , they are still king as far as standard off roaders are concerned , driven several G wagons both diesels, a tad under powered , and but all good , earlier ones used to take a right bashing and take it well , newer models a bit posy , and by the sounds of it , it will be another Chelsea tractor so should do you/the missus just fine

Crazy money for what you actually get. Style over substance.

(And whether or not they actually have any style is open to debate...)

The 70 series is unknown in the UK as never sold here I believe.
I know they are very popular in Africa and Australia, and the straight piped V8 diesel sounds awesome!

I'd advise looking at the following MB dealers:
Mark Taylor Specialist Vehicles (MTSV) https://www.mtsv.co.uk/Showroom.htm
Edward Hall

Also take a look at the MB Club.
