Hi

i have Maserati Gransport, this morning i can't select first and reverse gear. even i disconnect the battery, still the same. as soon as i upshift from neutral, it will engage second gear straight away. It skips first gear. i can hear the transmission try to engage the gear
When i open the door i can hear the f1 pump priming but sounds weak and really short time. Sounds like a low pressure.
The clutch wears out is 40%. no engine check light. no fail light illuminated for the transmission.

any idea guys whats wrong with it?

thanks

Sounds very much like clutch failure the read out is not that accurate. Hope you don't drive in auto.

That is a bummer......esp when no obvious cause/light on.....needs fully diagnosed.....hope its an easy fix.....and just fluid levels.....but normally a light would come on

relay, is it possible? i thought is the f1 pump because it sounds weak, sounds like not enough pressure..

If relay...it would fail immediately....if pump in decline or low fluid, more likely to try to work and not reach correct working pressure to engage....or just the clutch itself given up

My GS had exactly the same symptons. (Would not engage 1st gear but would eventually engage 2nd gear after loads of clunking and clanking). Fingers in the clutch had collapsed. New clutch required i think.

Yep, second James's advice, mind did the same in the middle of France, clutch cover spring fingers had collapsed on one side.

No intermediate fix, new clutch time, just what you need right before Xmas.

I've got exactly the same problem, makes sense that it's the fingers rather than a warn clutch plate as once I can actually engage a gear there's no slip, got a feeling this isn't going to be cheap

What's interesting though is that over the last week the f1 pump priming has got weaker and weaker until now when it doesn't prime atall. I'm not sure what the relationship is between that and the clutch issue?

Almost certainly clutch pressure plate failure. I had the same symptoms on my GS recently and required a complete new clutch.

Sorry to hear that BRRR...its the biggest wear expenditure on them.....depends on what needs replaced.....£1500-1800.....but lots of clutches( up-dated versions) now lasting....30/40 even 50K miles

Well I don't know, I am thinking hydraulics on this on possible is worth checking first.

The reason I say this is my clutch slipped terribly when the fingers collapsed and coupled with the audible weak pump.

For stationary gears (1st and reverse) the pressure plate needs depressing fully. Once moving its not so essential.

Thanks for all the responses

I tried to get the car moving to get to the local specialist and I thought I was in luck when I unlocked the car and the F1 primed, however today I couldn't get it into reverse or first atall and though after a lot of clunking it displayed as been in second when trying to then pull away it dropped back to N

Recovery truck coming in about an hour an ill just put it in the capable of hands of Garry at GT Autos

The clutch has done about 20k now and when I bought it 5k ago it had 31% wear

Hmmm, goes sound like finger springs to me if it's clunking and the pump is priming. Hope you get it sorted without too much expense BBR.

Hi all, GT autos have confirmed it was the fingers that have snapped off the pressure plate. thankfully all the work is now being done and i'll get the car back tomorrow

Oh well....at least you know, plus that it will likely last you 30-50K miles depending, so one worrry out of your hair for 4/5/6/7 years!
