Hi Sports Maserati Forum members
Help needed in Oslo Norway. My Maserati 3200GTA (99-model) needs the engine replaced.

Question 1: Any one that has an 3200GTA engine in good condition for sale?

Question 2: Any experience with fitting an 4200 engine in a 3200GTA?

Thank you for all replies and good advice here at the Forum.
My email is bre@geelmuyden-kiese.no

Can't imagine fitting a 4200 engine would be very easy - but it might physically fit as chassis are fairly similar.

Big issues
Wiring loom - made for the car.
Gearbox - 3200 located on the engine - 4200 has transaxle located at the rear
Steering column in 3200 does not have paddles

It would probably be easier, and better to buy a 4200 and put the boomerangs on the back!

If the basic block is similar the gearbox mounting may not be much of a problem. If you can use the 3200 box on the 4200 the flappy paddles wont be a problem either. The wiring, IMO, will be the biggest headache as there are a few turbo sensors that wont be used and may cause problems with other systems if they aren't connected. To me, it wouldn't be worth the hassle. Stick to the 3200 and keep your fingers crossed!

The front subframes are different, so mounting points would most probably need altering (never mind fitting all the 4200 / 3200 ancillaries if you get it in), the 3200 gearbox is in the wrong place and all of the above. Even if all this could be overcome, the balance, suspension geometry and weight distribution would be awful.

I agree with Benny in post 5.

Wouldn't you need a 4200 bonnet as well if you wanted to put the engine in a 3200 as the 4200 bonnet was a different shape to clear the engine as I understand it.

Andy NO! You would have to make the engine fit under it. You would have to keep the vents no matter what. Along with the boomerangs they are the very essence of the 3200. They would have to stay or I will refer you to post 5.

Ok, I think the answer to this is no then, its just not worth it.

Besides, the 3200 engine is one you have to drive, its bonkers, the 4200 is the better engine, but is more refined, like the 3200 lump grew up and got a mortgage!

I was talking to a chap last night who had a 3200 and he said he was once doing a 3 point turn in his drive way, turned round to wave goodbye to his significant other as he was completing the turn and it came on boost and ended up facing the wrong way.

Are they really this aggressive?

They are bonkers, believe me. The throttle also suffers from being hyper sensitive, add these things together and yes, accidents happen.

Sounds a lot like my old Lancer. (See Evo page 102 top right). At 2950 rpm it was putting out about 50bhp and at 3050 about 150. Not good on wet roundabouts at night and I know that from bitter experience!

I must be remembering it strangely but I had my 3200GT a decade ago and, yes, it had a sensitive throttle but I did not think it was that bad.
