There is no 14 day law. There is no difference with issues whether it be a DSA or in person.

How much better would someone do viewing a car in person?
No 14 day protection.
Rose tinted specs.

I'd say you're more likely to end up in a pickle, yet the difference might be, people not communicating it clearly.
View it then buy it online or if the videos, spec and costs are right, arrange a ppi. Then buy it online. What's to stop you doing that? As long as they don't know its you ;)

Given your website implies you sell cars, I hate to call this one, but are you sure? Distant selling regulations were disbanded in 2014, but replacing them is consumer contracts. You cannot be in person for any part of the sale (almost) and as long as it is internet only, there is a right to return for a full refund within 14 days. No quibble....

Or are you referring to sale of goods act and fit for purpose?

I am sure. We sell more Maseratis than anywhere in the U.K. and I’m fully aware of the laws. They are ridiculously in favour of the consumer. It’s all very complex, but don’t worry, you have the right to reject the car. How much he must refund you depends on the DSA you should have signed when receiving the car.

I may have misread your penultimate post to this one, hence trying to word the prompt hopefully with the appropriate respect given your experience.

That may not be taking into consideration the issues with MOT for example. This might cause them a little bit of aggro, however, got another call in 5 minutes.

I am to the despair of everyone attempting to keep the car. If the amount of money offered is right, then getting the car up to scratch is doable. That will be my decision at that point and if it backfires, then so be it.

I'll keep you posted.

That said, how sure are you that this car needs a new subframe?

And how confident are you that nothing is going to let go when you doing 100mph?

No such thing as a cheap Maserati and although I admire your thinking and approach, there are too many red flags here.

At the end of the day it is up to you if the deal is right. If you are spannering it yourself then cost will be significantly less although parts won't unless you find alternative sources ie fiat alfa etc. or used.

Before you make that deal though, I would throw another 250 at it and get a mas specialist to look it over and report back. That way a) you can run, b) have a to do list, c) peace of mind your decision was right.

These cars have their quirks and you really need to know what they are and where to look. You need Mas experience to know that.

Good luck.

You may want to look into parts prices before reaching an agreement. I had a good look into this when I originally negotiated on my 2010 GT S. I threw £10,000 at the car through a specialist (AV Engineering) and a large proportion of that was parts.. and mine was actually a decent car, it’s just that all the usual GT issues needed attending to in one go.
Like others, I am slightly puzzled why you would keep a car with that many red flags, but each to their own of course.

Here is what my PPI came up with:

  • New front wishbones top and bottom required
  • New valve cover gaskets required
  • New engine mounts required
  • New coolant expansion tank required
  • Corrosion on underside of subframe - clean up, treat and seal all underside of vehicle, replace chassis plates
  • Nearside and off side rear suspension covers missing - fit replacements
  • Mirror adjustments switch not working - replace
  • Major service required.
  • All 4 brake discs somewhat corroded and will need replacing at 'some point in the near future'
  • Metallic clicking sound can be heard with drivers side window down under load at low speeds (likely to be hand brake caliper)
  • Driver's door Chrome surround damaged - replace
  • All seat adjustment levers missing - replace
  • Boot lid handle not working
  • Boot lid chrome trim loose
  • Boot lid edge badly chipped
  • Front bumper grilles slightly adrift
  • Off side rear anti stone chip film pealing
  • All alloys scuffed or chipped
  • both doors have 'thumb dents' requires a smart repair or full bodyshop.

Come on Mr Spoon play nicely.
Most on here have had a great deal of experience of these cars and how they can catch people out.
The advice you are getting is free and designed to be helpful and is sound.
If you are going in “eyes wide open” many will applaud your “8alls” in the same way we caution you now.

Have to say Mr Spoon, if you’re going in eyes wide open and you know the standard your shooting at for your car (and the likely cost to get there) then great and good for you! Cars are not always about conventional logic. I bought a relatively new GT that’s gonna burn through cash in depreciation (and maintenance). But that’s what I wanted and my eyes were wide open coz I’m on this forum way too much

I wouldn't expect anything less. Dealers and specialists feed off of resale value anxiety.

I could write a list like that now and I'm not a specialist or a mechanic.
That’s a pretty unfair comment in my book. I had a third party PPI done by a reputable company (Nuvola) The above mentioned items were flagged up, a deal was struck with the private seller based on the red flags, and I then took the car to AV for a second inspection and to discuss what work was required. AV already had my 360 Modena in the workshop for an engine rebuild.. I know Aldous very well and he would in no way pressure you or give you resale value anxiety.
I was merely trying to show you potential expensive issues on what was in general considered a decent car.
Good luck with it and that’s the end of my comments on this thread.

Well if I've got to page 16 before upsetting someone that's a record for me.

I'm sorry that you feel my opinion is unfair, I understood why you posted your list from the inspection. I've had a similar report on the Porsche. I would imagine almost every used car will have a list as long as your arm.

Yes brand specific garages will have more experience than those who don't, but I took a look under the masersti. The coil spring looked like a coil spring and the anti roll bar did too. In fact there's so much space under there it looks a dam right easier to access this than the Porsche or the Renault.

Your choice if you don't wish to comment, appreciate the ones you've made.

I think we should all applaud Mr Spoons, he’s doing a very honourable thing, sacrificing himself to keep some unsuspecting punter from buying a lemon ;)
