Hi Guys , just doing some brain picking , was up to scratch with this kind of malaki 20 years ago , but like all things systems change , looked at a property at the weekend , a quiet close full of bungalows , viewed a nice large corner plot at the very end of the close with oil fired central heating, ( but with no gas service/meter) bungalow each side has gas .........................anyone have recent experience of costs having a service installed complete with meter by the National grid from the road to the bungalow

Can’t help you with the cost of connecting to the mains but remember you need to factor in a new boiler, cooker, disposal of the oil tank/supply and as it’s Lowestoft probably gas lighting too

We do commercial connections. And they can be offensively expensive.
First thing you need to find out is if it's callor gas or from the mains.

If there is a mains connection, then all you will be paying for is the groundworks from the main to your house. Plus the meter install cost.
Then you have to get a the heating system installed.
Plus you will have to get the oil pipework and tank removed and remedy any clean up.

Not straightforward by any means.

Our rental has oil heating (it stinks) but next door is on Calor and gets filled twice a year. Our oil tank has been filled 3 times since October!

Don't be rude. They burn whale fat to keep the street lamps lit.

Connection to the gas mains can be anywhere between £2,000 - £6,000, plus the cost of boiler and cylinder around £3,000 - £6,000

Get yourself a heat pump instead. £12,000 - £15,000 installation cost with up to £12,810 back in renewable heat incentive - No brainer

And for you Loz me old mucker, I'll do you a friends and family discount seeing as you're only up the road from me. And its been ages since I saw you!!!

There is an oil fired heating system already installed working fine , with atleast 1/2 radiators in every room , now as i understand it , i can use the same system swapping over the boiler for a new gas unit either condensing or combi for around (£750 for a new boiler ) plus install £300 ................i had one done here in MK a year ago ..........................then i was planning to just upgrade the radiators to more modern ones, ............................just had the official quote from Cadent gas contractors (for lowestoft area) quoting £1120 plus vat complete gas connection service install including new meter in new meter housing, that includes all earthworks re digging trenches and back filling ...................or £720 plus vat with me digging the trenches and back filling etc as i will have a digger onsite for landscaping and digging footings for the (workshop/garage extension ) for £350 saving i'd rather they have all the responsibility as close by will probably be the mains electric incoming , and i'd hate to catch that with the digger bucket lol

I was corgi registered for over 20 years (now gas safe ) so i know what im doing piping and test wise , i have a friend ex employee who is Gas safe registered still and will let me do the work and internal install, then he will come along and do the final both ends connections test and fire up and certificate. Looks like im sorted and not quite as bad as I anticipated

That's a decent price for the groundworks including the meter.
Maybe Cadent just charge commercials a fortune.
If you go with it, make sure the price is for the job completed. We had one quote which came back with a £5k potentially contingency incase they came across something untoward!
Basically it was near Tilbury and they find a lot of unexploded bombs around there from WW2.

Its early days yet Dan , as i said above there is heating system albeit oil , im just not anticipating cooking on electric , i hate it , even using latest halogen hobs etc so gas supply install is a must regardless ,air/ground heat source pump route im not so sure we will live long enough to benefit from it longer term , its the one of the first things me and Kaz discussed , so its looking like swapping oil fired boiler for a gas combi or gas condensing unit once the new supply and meter is installed...............................but thats no reason why we cant have a meet up ..........been a while and im sure we could manage a long afternoon over a few beers just catching up

Had a quick dig for you Loz

National Grid don't do it: https://www.nationalgrid.com/uk/gas-transmission/connections/domestic-connections-and-homeowners

Instead you need to contact the local network: https://www.energynetworks.org/info/faqs/who-is-my-network-operator.html

You search for your local, then just phone them i think

Hope that helps

EDIT - oops, just read your post above, looks like you've found Cadent and at a good price. Good luck with the potential purchase

Cheers matey, Cadent are the contractors used by energy networks ,sods law they are all working from home soley by email so taking an age , but i think im there now

They’ve not reached the 19th century and moved on to town gas yet then?

Not yet. The smell of burning sperm whale oil is very prevalent across many parts of coastal Suffolk and Norfolk.

At least, that's what I've always assumed the smell is.

When I moved into my 'mansion' in Cumbria 7 years ago, the nearest gas main was c. 550m away. At the time I was quoted around £120 +VAT per metre to bring the mains connection to the house plus the cost of a new boiler. So on working up the various options and associated businesses cases, I opted to stick with Oil but fit a 80kw high efficiency boiler from Worcester Bosch. So not cheap by any stretch. But also don't forget that the price of oil has crashed over the last 3 months so I'm paying 26p/litre now while 6 months ago it was 56p/litre. I bet the unit price of gas hasnt come down anywhere near as much. Food for thought.
