The only thing I would ask is do you need to work? If you don’t then find an exit strategy and then do something completely different. I retired at 55 and since then have had a couple of random **** jobs, done a degree in a subject I’m really interested in, travelled, bought a Maserati, been a radio DJ, done a lot of music writing, learned to play golf, volunteered at Citizens Advice for the last five years and worked for the football club I have supported all my life. The last 6 years have probably been the best I’ve ever had and I’m still excited about what I’m going to do next.

This is what we should be aspiring to. Well done!

Yes, I'm afraid so. We moved 5 years ago and I'm glad we did. I think you popped by a while back in fact if memory serves me correctly. Means there is still a fair mortgage that needs to be met. Also with wife, 2 kids and reasonable bills there is still a fair amount of pressure to keep feeding the firs that burns. We have one less school fee now and the 2nd hopefully will cease in 18 months.

The real decider is if we can get permission to build a new house. If we can and we decide to sell the existing house we will be living in a lovely ideal house and no mortgage. This then changes everything and the need to work still exists but the number required will be substantially less. At this point I could pretty much do anything to a point. Especially if the business was still working well and either giving me a small return/income without the need to work in it. Or to sell it for an amount and use that in various ways.

The next 2-3 years are quite key really and decide if at 50 I will be in a great position or less so. Either way it is my own doing to date as the drive to keep pushing has been there. If I eased off it would make it much easier. I just felt if I didn't push at times of best health and energy it would likely lessen with age.

It is great to hear what you have done and it has worked well for you. Well done and long may it continue
