Not a happy car

Just had the phone call I didn't want from the guys at Emblem, looks like she ingested some of the cat that broke up, so cyl no 1 is F***ed, so now have decisions to make, is it worth spending around £7 grand having a replacement engine fitted to a car that is probably only worth around £10k? or do I cut my losses and go and talk nicely to the bank manager and get a gransport? really don't know what to do, to say I am gutted is an understatement. :0036::0036::0036:

Sorry to be reading this and decisions indeed.
If you could do some of the work yourself you could half the repair costs.
I saved my last one from on here.

Ugh... bad luck, I was rooting for you.

It's totally worth £7k for a new engine:
  • Better the devil you know (I'm assuming what you were considering taking on that it's otherwise well sorted)
  • You might be waiting a while for a Med Blu GS
  • You spend £7k vs. net £15-20k
  • You get the respect of the SM community for saving a fine machine
Wasn't someone on here selling a 4200 engine recently?

Put it another way. What if the bill had been £5k? Or £3k? No brainer, and it's not a huge amount of difference in the grand scheme.

Unless you want a GS of course, in which case this is your lucky day!

Seriously, bad luck though.

Whilst Emblem are undeniably excellent, I would phone around and see what other prices you can get.
Autofficina tend to do work like this a reasonable amount as well.

Then there are your not 100% Maserati/Ferrari specialists that will be less expensive still.

I recommended someone who was ex DK Engineering, so petty much best you can get. Will try and find his details.

Dilemma is it's not a perfect car, got 83000 on the clock, but was always going to be a long term project, been gradually working my way through the list of things that need doing, new brakes all round last year, new springs, craig Watermans rear tie bars, new brake lines, still plenty to do though not least of which would have been a re spray at end of mechanical fixes, as is quite stone chipped, time to make some phone calls I think.

Buy a second hand engine ( Sporano Stu) and get someone to put it in for a grand . I know someone that would fit it for you . PM me.
Mind you if its a high milage 4200 then it was probably only worth about 11k . You might get £3 k if you break it depending on whats good on it .

I would keep the car, shop around for engine and fitment, Autofficina swapped the engine in my AC, prior to me getting it. At least you know the car, and have a running car to sell/trade for a Gransport when the time comes.

Sorry to hear that James. I saw it at Emblem earlier today as I was collecting mine.

If a GS is actually what you want (which I suspect it is), use this as the excuse to upgrade. And prices of GS cars (other than the lowest mileage examples) seem to have slipped back slightly over recent months (especially if you want black), so that could help.

gut wrenching for you mate, sometimes you need to listen to your head and not your heart, but I would cut my losses and get rid, if you advertise it as a spares or repair you might still get a really good price for it from someone who can do the work themselves as a keeper

Thanks Ewan, have had a very reasonable offer to have a low mileage engine fitted, and also a good offer to sell to a breaker, was gradually making it as much gransport like as I could, so you may be right, and I really like the one that ADG have, decisions, decisions.

Sorry to here this.
No way would I spend £7k on a 10k car though.

Either sell it for parts or buy a used engine and have It fitted for a reasonable price.
