Odometer Flashing

Welcome to the forum, it is customary to post pictures :)

I have heard of this issue once before, I think the car had a replacement NIT and there was a conflict in the firmware. Contigo may well be able to comment.

I had this on a 2008 Fiat 500. No help I realise, but it was a battery issue - a common Italian trait it seems

A bit late to pick this up, but I do have a fix which worked for me, below.

I started my (lovely new) QPV this afternoon and the clock was set to 2:52am and the odometer was flashing. Rather a worry. Did some quick searching and seems to be to do with the NIT and the ECU not agreeing, so the flashing is an error warning. Lot of sites said you need a dealer to fix it. But I found this, and it worked:
  1. Car is off
  2. Insert the key
  3. Turn the key to Accessory Mode (but don't start the car)
  4. Put the Hazard Lights on
  5. Then turn the Hazard Lights off again
  6. Turn key to Off Position
  7. Take the key out
  8. Put the key back in
  9. The odometer may have stopped flashing
Thank you Fiat 500 owners forum!

Seems like voodoo. You could also probably try walking around the car anticlockwise while singing La Traviata, but this first approach worked for me.

Back story: As told to me by Matt and the previous owner, my car has had an issue in the past with the radio turning itself on when parked, and flattening the battery. Some previous garage 'solved' the problem by installing a completely separate radio cut-off switch under the dash. Matt said he thought he had very likely fixed the problem by fettling the normal radio switch. I thought I would give the cut-off switch a try when parked this morning, but while it does indeed cut power to the radio, apparently it also messes with the handshake with the NIT and somehow confuses the clock, so probably won't be trying that again!

I got the flashing odometer and dead screen thing again yesterday. Will need to try the voodoo above.

For clarification the flashing odometer is the result of the body computer failing a handshake off all of the cars ecu’s

For example, if you disconnect the TPMS ecu or other such module the odometer will flash to alert you of the failure

The workshop fix is to do a proxy align which resets the procedure but it won’t fix the issue if an ecu has changed or is not present.

We can download the proxy file, edit it on the computer then upload and then complete a proxy align

I'm now getting a random and intermittent mixture of the flashing odometer thing and a dead audio/screen. Plus mechanical clock is bonkers.

I was hoping it would go away by itself but, it is recurring every 5-30 minutes.

Probably something @conaero can fix in two minutes in a rainy car-park in Stevenage one night....
