Oil And Additives?

Hi,

I need a good, solid recommendation for engine oil for my 2005 QP, my driving style varies from OAP to OTT!

Also, use at least a litre of Lucas Oil Stabliser in all my vintage cars, what are your thoughts on using this in the QP?
It definitely quietens the engine and reduces wear, particularly on cold starts.

Thanks,

Pat.

Pat,

I don't like the sound of it quietening the engine (no pun intended). If it is having that affect it must be thicker to mask some of the noise and if it is thicker I would worry about it clogging small galleries.

Modern oils and modern engine development have been advancing together hand in glove. There was a time I would have said all oils are the same and the manufacturer wanting you to use a specific brand is simply a marketing exercise. I no longer think that is the case.

Luckily we are talking about petrol engines which seem to have a bit more leeway than diesels with their specific needs concerning DPFs ERGs and whatnot. Read some of the horror stories on other forums about how cocked up a diesel engine can be if you run it on the wrong oil.

But why take the risk? The Shell Helix Maserati recommend is not outrageously dear if ordered from the likes of http://www.opieoils.co.uk whom I use and find to be very good on price and delivery.

My QP doesn't seem to use much so it is a very minor expense in the scheme of things.

Thanks for the reply.

The only oil I can get my hands on in time for the oil change is Castrol Edge 5w-40 Syn. Any thoughts on this oil?

Not a fan of additives at all, the shell helix 5w40 is fine , its not the "best oil", but best idea is to use it and just change the oil more frequently as the risk of OTT high temp driving is that the oil molecules shear, and hence are not the ideal size/viscosity. You could get a higher spec oil uch as fuchs racing? least i think thats the name , which is less likely to shear. However, it is always safest to stay with what the engine was designed to run. So just get the oil changed more frequently, if i do a track day, whatever the car, i change the oil pre and post the track day
