Cross threaded maybe. would explain the mangled thread and the split in the nut.

Over tightened rather than cross threaded would be my guess, the union is just alloy. Do it up too tight and it breaks the threads off. My guess is the mechanic would have felt it go a little loose as he over did it.

I guess the mechanic equates large nut with lots of torque, whereas it's an alloy fitting and is only holding back oil at a low pressure. Mine was not showing any signs of leaking, so as far as the mechanic is concerned it's a winner.

Thanks for the intel guys, I had never heard of this.
Exactly the reason for this forum.
Well done.

Had the oil pipe disconnected on mine twice now.
First time for subframe change and second time to clean the dry sump tank strainer.
Still looks perfect and no history of a replacement pipe at 16yrs old and 70k
But definitely worth checking at each service still.

Finally took delivery of my, new, oil tank threaded connector and installed together with my new Hill Eng. Split Nut. I'm surprised Hill don't make the threaded connector to accompany the Split Nut, replacing both, in my case, was the only option.
Now I can finally finish my oil change.
