Porsche Panamera Maserati QP VI or Lavente - daily driver challenge

I have a budget of £30k to £35k-ish to spend on a new diesel daily to replace my 2010 Mercedes CLS 350 CDI Grand Edition - it has been a great car but it is getting a little long in the tooth and we are looking to upgrade

Initially we looked at the next generation facelifted CLS from 2014 but it is lacking something... The interior is not as special as the first generation W219 and it's a bit of a lump to look at - however the back seats do fold and there is a shooting brake option which is very practical for us as we go camping in the summers and go cycling throughout the year.

The Porsche Panamera Diesel checks a lot of boxes, great interior and personally I like the styling but I know it is not for everyone. Decent sized boot with the seats folded and it's a hatch so easy access. Parts prices and availability seems decent with servicing costs not far off the Mercedes. It is however more expensive to buy... I can get a very nicely spec'd CLS for £25k from Mercedes Retail the porker is £35k and barely any used approved at the dealerships

The QP and Lavente are wild cards, to be honest I am not very keen as the diesel engine is not up the scratch next to the Germans and parts/servicing are expensive even compared to the Porsche... However they are newer cars and I am willing to listen to arguments for them if anyone is willing to share their experiences?

The porker for 35k will be either quit old or high mileage... good motor though..

The Newer CLS shooting brake in 350d guise on a 2018 is a good car, agree about not as good inside but a fine 2wd car nonetheless..

Have you considered the Audi A7.. 19 plate 282 3.0 quattro - this one is a little high miles but a decent sized 4wd hatch, better inside build quality than the current Mercs and Beemers... lots of tech and they drive rather well. for 35k at Main dealers you can get a decent one this time of year.. avoid the low engine 204bhp models.. glacially slow on the take off.

Oh.. and Merc E43 ... you can get your hands on a 2017 - 67 plate saloon or estate for that money and they are rather nice..

@Manc5 thanks for weighing in! Yes the Audi was a contender but the wife has vito'd it because 3 of her directors at work have A7s ( the 3.0 diesel A7, S7 and RS7 because they had to out to each other right?) And she does not want to get involved in that which is fair enough! It is a shared car btw

That Panamera at Porsche East London only has 8k miles on it but yes it is older than the rest being from 2015 but that is acceptable. Most of them under £30k are over 6 years old with 60k+ miles

I will look at the E43 but the problem with the E class is that they have the airport taxi vibe... Super practical though

That A7 looks like a spaceship inside lol

Worth a look I suppose considering its only 2 years old. I'm not the biggest Audi fan that said I don't like Porsches either :frusty6:

We looked at a Lavante but the petrols were too thirsty and diesel is dead if you intend to keep for a few years and drive in a city.

I am not so sure diesel is quite yet dead

Even my 10 year old mercedes 3.0 V6 diesel is ULEZ exempt, so is the Porsche Panamera

It will be used for long journeys for work (around 10k miles per year) and personal life as well as short journeys to the shops/gym etc. diesel works better for us than plug-in hybrid as I considered the Panamera S e-hybrid also.

I’ve always liked the panamera but it is a bit of a marmite car. Interiors are good quality and their not too common a sight on the road.

Not a diesel, but I had a Panamera Turbo as loaner for a week. Bloody immense! In every way. Loved it but it was far too big. It was only when I parked berthed it on the drive I realised how much space it used. What a car, though.

I'd guess of that lot it's probably the least prone to depreciation.

FWIW I personally wouldn't touch a diesel, but I guess that's a thought process you've already been through.

I had a Porsche Panamera diesel absolutely loved it. Was bulletproof and ticked all the boxes. Looks great in Silver mine was GT Silver. I had the same wheels and was a very capable car. Better to have PASM and reverse camera mine had rear electric seats and climate too. In my 4 + years of ownership no bills apart from usual servicing done by my independent Porsche specialist who I can recommend. Just make sure the recall work has been done it will be free done by Porsche and I think it was to do with wiring loom AFAIK. Just ask them anyway. Will get another but the Gen 2 in the future.

Just checked what the recall was and it was that Dealers will add a relay harness to the blower control unit in affected vehicles and reseal it to protect it from water damage.

@Felonious Crud this is the other car I am considering from the range

I have calculated it roughly and I think I will end up at the same place for the cost of fuel on both models - the lost profit from my company mileage on fueling the V6 hybrid will probably be gained back driving around town. The battery lasts around 12-20 miles depending on conditions while the V6 does around 35mpg average on long journeys (which is about the same as my current CLS). E hybrid owners report an average recorded mpg of around 40 while the diesel does 45 which isn't world's appart either

Problem is the potential for the hybrid gubbins failing so it would need a bulletproof warranty - I think the diesel is the safer bet as a used purchase. But if anyone has experience with this model I am happy to be informed otherwise

@Koz thank you for your input very useful to have an owners advice. Reversing camera seems essential and I will ask about the recall.

I mentioned warranty above, would Porsche be the best source for a policy? https://www.porsche.com/uk/approvedused/porscheapproved/usedcar/features/warranty/

I would go Porsche as I’ve found their warranties to be belt and braces in my experience. But they will be strict on any non Porsche items used eg non N rated tyres etc. But best to check out the T&C’s

Personally, and from having driven both petrol and diesel variants of many cars for typically 40 - 50k miles per annum. at only 15k miles I would pay the £40-£50 mth premium for the petrol version whatever the car. And that is before the continued squeeze on diesel from govt.
From your options above I would take the Panamera as the interior looks fantastic. Put it in the garage and nobody has to look at the outside! They are much better now, but worth watching the TG Panamera vs Rapide vs QPV for some amusing perspectives on its looks.

Although Covid has reduced my driving for work significantly, I achieve c90% of my miles in electric mode in my hybrid which has similar range to the Porker.

What I love about this thread so far is no one is trying to convince me to buy a Maserati but instead outrage that I would consider a diesel... Shows the lack of desirability in the current Maserati offer

I am not certain about getting the diesel now so the petrol V6 and V6 hybrid are back on the table.

Maserati/diesel just doesn’t sit right with me. I love the QPV5 and the QPV6 looks good from the front but wtf happened at the rear?
