Potential Granturismo owner. Warranty advice needed

Hi!

First post here so please take it easy on me if this is a question thats been asked a thousand times!

I'm looking at taking the plunge and buying a granturismo, preferably an early 4.7 (so around a 2009ish). Do Maserati offer an extended warranty option? I've googled it but couldn't find anything. I currently own an E92 M3 and this is something BMW do so hoping similar could be done with a Granturismo?

If not, is there any third party warranty companies people use and could recommend? The thought of owning a Maserati without some kind of warranty on it is a scary prospect!

Also, When buying, is there any particular areas I should be paying a bit of extra attention to (common faults etc etc)?

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi and welcome.......Not sure about warranty but sure someone can help......

As a E92 M3 owner you will be aware of the variators issues well Maserati's suffer the same of a certain age. There is a thread in this.

Hi and welcome.

Maserati do extend the warranty to years 4 and 5 but that will not be relevant with a 2009 car.

It might be best to talk to Dicky Grace, as he offers what I believe is a Warranty Wise policy and I believe that these are worth having. Dont bother with the cheap alternatives, they are simply not worth the paper they are written on.

The 4.7 is definitely the one to go for.

Suspension and more so the bushes are starting to come up as issue and if you go for the MC shift (I highly recommend this) then the clutches last 35-50k miles and is a £3k job.

Variators are the other issues. I recommend you go for a later car (2010) and after a certain engine number (Contigo/Catman will confirm that number) or have a car that has had the £3k modification done.

Brakes on the 4.7 are pricey and easy to warp so again, check their replacement and condition. You can skim them a couple of times but if its already been done you will be force to replace them (again, about £2k area)

Other than that, they are a very reliable car and just the usual things such as tyres and general condition to look out for.

You wont get a Maserati warranty on a car that old, even if via a MD; It would have to be a generic one.

Also unlikely to find one at that age in the dealer network.

Suggest you give Richard Grace a call he will be abke to source the car and offer a decent warranty.

Expect to pay £2k+ pa for a warranty which covers the important items... but many will suggest saving that money into a war chest as the warranty will not cover everything.

Good luck with the search.

Concerning the variator issue. As a guide, my 59 plate 4.7 is engine# 154xxx. So somewhere between 09 and 59 plates is the area to watch out for.

Warranty Wise were pretty good with my warranty :)

Issues on the GT:
Broken springs
Drop links
Weeping oil pressure sender
Variators (echo)
Cracked exhaust manifold (LHS only, go figure)
Cracked coolant header tank (2/3 of sod all to fix)
I also had my regulator / rectifier fail.

Great car though :D

Yes, two thumbs-up for WarrantyWise.

The warranty fixed all manner of odds and sods in the first 6 months of my ownership of a GTS. WarrantyWise were excellent and quibbled nothing. After a year, when I went 'bare-back' I was nervous of some ruinous bill or other, but the car behaved impeccably and the tremendous knowledge base and help on this forum made owning it and running it not just financially tolerable but also richer and far more enjoyable. There are also some excellent independents for servicing and repairs. No need to pay £200/hr (plus VAT!) to your local main dealer.

If you get one, stick around here and you won't go far wrong.

Can anyone with a warrantywise policy tell me if the dreaded variators might be covered in any case given they are a known issue

Oh I had to take it to Quentin, though. I've still got the emails somewhere I suspect....
