Newbie to Maserati ownership and I’m sure this topic is done to death. What do people advise for rear tyres on a 2005 qp?

Currently on pzero 295/30/r19 but confusing info on the correct fitment.

Thanks in advance

I have P-Zero's all round and I don't like them on my QPV, very sensitive to tyre pressure and for me jump about a bit over road markings, coming into motorway at speed and crossing the white lines usually results in a sort of jump over them. 4mm tread left on them, might take them off and save them and get some winter tyres, I want to try the Vredsteins I've heard good things about.

Other than that I thinks folks here like Continentals....

PS I've had my tracking done though not for a while....

Thanks dicky... I was hoping for more constructive info on brand and size given that some run different sizes than the manual says.

Not that many IME. Certainly more common over the pond, it feels. Never quite understood why but each to their own as it were.

FWIW I've run Michelin Sport Pilots on my GT. Swapped the rears for Vredstein Vortirtrac Ultras (or some other name favouring letters from the **** end of the alphabet) and they seem rather decent as well as being reasonably priced.

I was saying about reading the manual because all years and models of QP have different sized wheels and tyres. Re brands, common consensus is that Pilot Sports are the best, but they’re also the dearest.

Yes I agree. I have P-zero Rossos on at the moment - as it says in the manual :) - and they seem very jumpy. I'm looking forward to putting my winter tyres on (which are Pirelli Winter Sottozero) which seem much more stable.

For my next summer tyres, the word seems to be that the best options are: Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3, Michelin Pilot Sport 3, or Continental Sport Contact 3

But sometimes it is just all about what you can get hold of - especially, it seems, if you have 19in wheels, as all the standard sites offer 18 or 20 for my Reg, when I need (I think) 245/40R19 (front) and 285/35R19 (rear)

Re summer tyres - I’m finding the Continentals the best so far. Michelins were very soft and Pirelli PZero were a bit hard. But as MarkMas says, it’s sometimes down to what you can get hold of.

I was initially convinced that Pirelli on an Italian car would be most appropriate, so I changed the worn and wiggly Michelin rears to Pirelli to match the half worn fronts. I backed that decision up with the manual, which says Pirelli or Michelin.

Initially I was pleased but not delighted with the Pirelli decision, then I got a slow puncture in the rear and knackered the side wall, so I took the plunge and bought a full set of Contis. Really pleased so far. Our last MiTo did 40k on Contis and my Defender still has plenty of Continental tread left after 42k miles. The Contis seem to be quieter too.

I reckon a lot of manufacturers’ recommendations come down to politics and whose doing what deal at what time, rather than being specifically designed into the car development process. The Contis are not in the manual, but they are used on the newer QPs

So sorry MarkMas but not this time. It’s the first meeting of the season for the Teifi Valley Gentleman’s Music Club on Saturday night and no member will be sober enough to drive on Sunday.

That sounds like fun. I have one of those on Friday - lunch, followed by 'try to find my way home' by train, bus...

....

Very happy to have my nice winter Sottozeros back on the QPV.

Also have invested in some very nice bags to make it a bit easier to transport the tyres back and forth.

Echo advice form dicky grace - the manual does need to be checked. Pick any brand or price remembering that contact patch with the road is about the size of your own hand per wheel, so less than ten percent of your purchase is doing the gripping.

My experience of repeated kerb damage leads me to add 10mm to standard width at rear (correct size 285 30 ZR20) . My Sport GT has 295 / 30 ZR20 Michelin Pilot Sport 4s
They are close to wear bars and spare items have been bought. The car does seem quite squirmy on worn rears. Think it did this last time too but will have a proper look when the wheels come off.

I’ve had PZeros, pilot sports, now on a full set of Falken Avensis FK510’s. I haven’t tracked it, price is great and the wear is far less than expected. Grip and noise all great.
