New rant (and at risk of opening a can of worms that the mods will have to slam shut):
  • I just posted (elsewhere) in response to a question on calling out racism, that white people find it hard to confront racism and we need to have better resources to help with this.
  • I got called a racist old gammon (in effect) and told to 'read a book' (by a right-on white person) for: 'saying that white-person problems are more important than racism', and that 'black people should have to do all the work to counter racism'.
  • Responded that I hadn't said any of these things, and that I had meant that white people need to do better, that it was our responsibility to combat racism, and that black people have other things to worry about.
  • Was asked (by the same person) what I meant by black people have other things to worry about, and suggesting that I was being oppressive and patronising by saying that.
  • I said that what I had in mind was that black people had to worry about every-day racism and oppression, and also repeated that I had always agreed that racism was a white-person problem, and had never suggested otherwise.
  • I was told that my original message clearly gave the impression that I was saying white people have it tough and that black people should do better.
  • I replied that I had never said that, even if that was the impression they had formed, and that I had made that abundantly clear.
  • Was told that I was obviously changing my position, in response to being educated, and that I was 'having a go' by arguing, proving that I was wrong.
It is hard to be an ally sometimes, when people hear what they want to hear in order to score virtue points.

I have learnt that some people have “an agenda” and only hear what they want to hear, racism, sexism, environment...... in which case you can’t win. Just be happy that you are not racist and will do your best to call it out.

Yup, the tirade I get for driving a Maserati. Yet I have PVs on the house and am looking at ASHP. I don't have a dog or kids. Only buy the food I need and not waste it, nor buy out of season. Only shower for 5 minutes using soap not shower gel. The list goes on.
Yet the hippies will judge.

Something on the radio yesterday about Dyson building ventilators for the NHS and the PM assuring him about tax on the phone

if you're rich enough you get to sort out your tax affairs with the PM

They're all in it for the money ,if you're rich enough you get the PMs mobile number , ask James Dyson

It's probably very satisfying for some people to imagine that the James Dyson 'scandal' is proof of rich people profiting from cronyism. But it really isn't remotely true.

When, at a time of urgent crisis, HMG asked Dyson if his company could build ventilators for the UK, Dyson said 'yes of course' and his company incurred several million £££ of costs working on the project. When it looked as if Dyson employees might personally suffer extra UK income tax if they came over to the UK from Singapore to work on the project, due to the way that UK tax laws work, he wrote to the Treasury and asked if the employees could be insulated from this extra taxation using established (or possibly amended) exemptions. When he did not get a response, he texted Boris. Maybe it is 'improper' that he used his personal connection to expedite this, but it is a real stretch to suggest that this is some sort of evil cronyism.

It is cynical and dishonest that this is being spun (by Starmer and the BBC amongst others) as a headline of "Boris Johnson told Sir James Dyson by text he would 'fix' tax issue"; which absolutely implies that it as for Dyson personally, it was a 'fix', that it was underhand and that Boris and Dyson both did something shady.

More tiresome accuracy. Can you at least temper it with something else that people can get outraged by? ;)
