Real rarity here – 2.8-litre Ghibli Cup

Most of them were 2.0-litres – which I'd prefer to own – but this looks to be in exquisite condition.

That's lovely, have you enquired how much?

Looks as new if not better, possibly more usable than a 2.0 litre? Not that I'd say no to either!

Absolutely stunning. But it would have to be a 2.0 to be a Cup wouldn't it? And no sign of a plaque inside (unless I missed that pic).

I'd have it though!

This is the car responsible for getting me into Maserati in the first place. Saw a red one about 13 years ago in a car park in Norfolk. Spent about half an hour walking around it examining every aspect of it's form..........God I love those alloys!!

Harry Metcalfe had a 2.8 Ghibli Cup before he bought the red 2.0 one I believe. Don't think they made many at all......I love the Ghibli Cup but they do look old now.....Suppose that is because they are.

I think his 2.8 was upgraded to Cup spec suspension before he bought a full Cup.
I like the fact it looks old. New cars rarely do anything for me - largely due to the mandated high belt line for passenger safety. Like the new Yaris rally homologation thing, mind.

Unfortunately Maseratis in Japan tend to be higher priced than here so one needs to add shipping, agents fees, duty and VAT and quickly you are 30-50% wrong. No rust though! Mostly LHD, some dubious bodykits and wheels too.

Yeah I was going to introduce some numbers but I've seen them range from 15 to 27. Whether those numbers include upgraded cars (like Metcalfe's) or whether they're full builds, I'm not sure.

There is at least 2 japanese 2.8 cup in Europe, mine (the red one) and a silver on in Germany.

I own it since 2012.

According M Collina, there was 27 ghibli cup 2800cc produced for the japanese market.

There were some differences between these and the ghibli GT 2800 :

Slight increase of power by ECU tweak (305ps/6100rpm and 43.5mkg/3650rpm).
The final gear ratio is lowered about 6%.
And all the other modifications done to the cup (speedline wheels, fuel cap, lowered, etc...).

This car is by far the most brutal/impressive of my maserati (3200GT AC, gransport MCV).

There was one for sale last year in Japan, in blu Francia, for 4.5M JPY.

As far as I recall, it was only the LHD 2.0 lt. cars that had numbered plaques. UK cars didn't, and nor did the 2.8's.
This example looks lovely, but the 2.8s have slightly less power than the 2.0 lt. cars, and the engine (being heavier and bigger) wasn't set quite so far back, so the handling is slightly different. In my mind only the 2.0 lt. cars are "real" Cup's, but I'm happy to accept other people taking a different view on that.

If I'm not mistaken, the engine block have the same size, the increased volume was done by increasing the bore and modifying the crank for a bigger stroke. If there was a weight difference, it should be marginal.

The 2.0 cup was indeed more powerful but the extra HP were only at the top. If you compare the power curve of both engine (2.0 cup VS 2.8cup, data used come from the enrico website), the story is not the same.

Is there a torque figure comparison graph?The standard 2.8s had more torque - and further down the Rev range - than the standard 2.0 (which had more power). Intrigued to see the differences for the Cup cars as I imagine it makes the 2.8s even more of a handful when the road’s moist.
