u decided what you're doing with plate, not convinced with the standard magnet thing unless it's 12v electro magnet, would be a conversation starter at meets, soon as you park up and cut power to magnet the plate drops to the ground :D

Not yet. The start point will be a clean, plateless front and the plate in the boot. Perhaps I should kick it up and down the road a few times for that authentic 'bloody fell, off, innit' look. Along with some dirty and inadequate double-sided tape to show that I tried.

Worst case, I do actually have to stick it on, in which case some not-too-strong tape will do the job I don't want to knacker the PPF. I might go for a smaller plate, the kind of size that Zep has on his Strad would do the job, I think. The Vantage is a small car and a standard plate takes up a lot of the front.

This sounds like a plan. Get some cheapo ebay tape. On the back of the plate. Then press it on the drive a couple of times so the tape is suitably non-sticky.

Then kick it around the drive (I have some suitable gravel if you like) to distress it and then lob it in the boot.

Although the critical words are 'Yes, sir. Officer. I heard it fall off about 2 miles ago. I stopped to pick it up and will order some better tape shortly after I arrive at $destination'

must say the standard big plate does look naff on the bumper as shown in your photo, i'd be inclined to go with your idea of having a suitably distressed plate in the boot in case you get stopped

Yes, that's where my thinking is going Whilst I like the magnets idea, we need to factor in the 'wife test'.

"So, why are you spending all day stripping your knuckles, swearing and generally breaking things on that stupid, too-small car?".
"Well, o' love of my life, I'm removing bits from the front of the car so I can stick some magnets behind the bumper so that I can then put a magnetic number plate on the front, even though it might fall off soon."
"Didn't you used to have a number plate on the front already?"
"Yes."
"****."

Do it while she's out?

Then present it (if needed) as a fait accompli

What happens when FC gets his hand stuck in the bumper?

Well, to be honest, that's FC's look out. I know worse things have happened to him, and if he can't come up with some kind of plausible excuse, I have very little sympathy.

Blimey, just because I've been married for nearly 25 years, do I have to spell everything out ;)

I was thinking more along the lines of if the Mrs is out who’s going to call the fire brigade to extract his hand from the bumper.

Snap a plate in half, or more and keep it in the boot. ”Some **** in Tescos hit my car officer and I’m waiting for a new plate to arrive”.

If you feel you have to have one for ANPR in car parks and such like, I’d look at one that clips into the lower grille. I used velcro on the Stradale but as it’s black, you couldn’t see it. It was **** but did the job the odd time I needed it to.

The best-laid plans... apparently filing the stamped holes in my front bumper are a swine. The main dealer body shop (which is very good) reckons they've never been able to manage it without the filler sinking over time and ending up with two dimples on the front. Bugger! I'd hoped this would be an easy 'fix'.

Plan B, smaller plate. Maybe a stick on one.

In other news, the detailer shared this picture of the paintwork that I had always thought was in pretty good shape:

on my GTS the body shop used a plastic weld technique to fill the holes, then filled and sanded as per normal prep.

On the Strad as it has PPF I am just going to fit a smaller plate for the moment.

We're in the same boat, Sam.

Now to source a small plate. Can anyone recommend somewhere?
